Chelsea Thread - 2023/24

I’ve just seen Reece James' red card for kicking out at a Brighton player.

He’s as bad as his sister.

Reece James is perhaps struggling with the weight of the captaincy. Just armchair speculation on my part but I don’t think he got a single red card in the last 4 seasons, and then suddenly he’s got 2 this season despite barely playing any football at all? He’s always been a quiet lad who led by example, and now suddenly he’s this petulant guy who can’t stop himself from lashing out? I’m guessing he’s the sort of player who needs to grow into the role of club captain.

The discourse around Lauren James though, is the strangest I’ve seen in a long time.

It’s what happens when a player gets sent off for England in the World Cup for a petulant act.

Yes and it was nearly a year ago. There are players in the WSL who are far more petulant, sometimes outright violent, who don’t receive half the vitriol James gets for one or two lapses in judgement in her (still very young) career

Agreed. However, she‘s higher profile and did it in a higher profile game.

She does live on the edge of taking things too far at times for me, but that’s what winners do.

If he, or Poch, doesn’t believe he is up to the task, someone else should be given the armband.

That’s just my speculation. Poch obviously thinks he’s the right man. He gave him the armband but my perception of James is he’s a quiet lad, so perhaps he’s overcompensating a little by trying to be this aggressive character on the pitch. He’ll hopefully eventually settle into the role and be totally fine in the long run.

Pretty good end to the season. Only wish we’d started to turn it around a little earlier, we could have potentially caught Villa in 4th. Hopefully we can take that into next season and hopefully put in a more respectable season.

Steady on mate there's a pre-season to go yet. Todd boehly has another 20 buys to give the manager lined up and they have to bed in.

Imagine Enzo had suffered his hernia 6 weeks earlier. You could have been in the Champions League. :-)
