This is probably the best board game in the world.

Once you become familiar with all the basic moves and routines a whole new dimension opens up - patterns and strategy, bluff and counter bluff.

I don't play nearly as often as I used to, but still love the game. I keep thinking that if we ever have a hot summer, it would be good to get some outdoor games going in town, like they do in a lot of other cities around the world.

Played chess as a kid (tbh found it a bit boring) , then at the age of twelve I was taught how to play backgammon...never looked back. Can't remember the last time I played chess, was many moons ago.

Love the idea of someone running away to America to become a travelling 'chess hustler'. Must be a film in that....
I read a brilliant book last year called The Grass Arena. It's the autobiography of a guy called John Healy, who became the worst kind of thieving, brawling, meths-swilling, park-dwelling down and out but who was saved from an early grave and turned his life around when he took up chess almost by accident and became an exceptional player. I think the BBC adapted it in the late 80s or early 90s. Well worth a read whether you like chess or not.
I'm useless at the game by the way. Don't even have the long range planning skills for draughts

Its a really cool game,and like most, really frustrating if you cant respond with some kind of decent effort,so it maybe worthwhile playing against the computer at differing grade levels,until you get the rudiments of the game,and find a comfortable level/standard..I find Chess Titans on windows to be a brilliant introduction.You can undo poorly thought out moves,to improve your game.

You should see how pro's play blitz (or bullet online, 1min each). They are amazing. White screwed up, could of had it easier.
Bc1 check, at 6:33,and game over much quicker.
