If the drug trade was legalised and regulated violent crime would plummet once the dealer networks no longer have a market. Obviously strong legislation would need to be in place to stop people on drugs from being a danger to others, and employers would need to be able to get rid of people who turn up stoned. At the end of the day though, for the softer drugs that are most prevalent, they’re a lot less detrimental to people’s health than alcohol.
Careful regulation and tax on drugs at the same levels as alcohol and tobacco would bring in a huge revenue stream to the Treasury allowing services that help with addiction to be funded properly with plenty left over for other things.
It’s a no brainer that just needs to be messaged right to minimise accusations of the government being soft.
