I was circumcised for medical reasons when I was a few months old. My cousin who is a few years older than me and lived with us at the time, has told me more than once that my screams when my mum was washing me will stay with him forever. So it's clearly a distressing and painful experience for the baby.

Circumcision is widely practised for religious health and comfort reasons.
In infants when done properly with local anaesthetic it is virtually painless.

If you wish to ban the practise you will be criminalising a lot of otherwise law abiding people and getting others pissed off. You will drive part of the practice underground which may result in greater pain and mutilation and infection.
Others will have the operation later in life which will result in more complications.

But yes it will mean that some islamophobes can feel all cute and cuddly about themselves on the spurious grounds that they are helping babies.

How many adults die because of circumcisions? Because one study puts the death rate of circumcisions performed on babies in America in hospitals at over 100 a year. That completely ignores the deaths caused by non-medical practitioners like those in the Orthadox Jewish communities, where the cause of death is often recorded as something else. In the UK, there is absolutely nothing stopping anyone offering circumcision services, and they don't have to use anesthetic (indeed, it's illegal to use anesthetic if you're not qualified to do so). So the "backstreet" circumcision services you warn of are already happening, and completely legally. The pain you claim doesn't happen with anesthetic (although clearly occurs for a significant period during the healing) is very real. And all for absolutely no benefit whatsoever. Incidentally, your apparent claim that it's quick and easy with no complications when done in an infant isn't true either. They can develop difficulty urinating, which needs to be fixed with (you guessed it) further surgery. The surgery can heal in the wrong places, meaning that they need to have it ripped open again (without anesthetic). It can cause problems with erections later in life, because too much skin was taken off. In New York alone, eleven babies in as many years contracted herpes during circumcision, causing 2 to die and 2 to suffer brain damage all in the name of a bullshit orthadox Jewish ritual. The idea that circumcision is a cure-all for any problems later on is bullshit. And obviously at the most basic level it can become infected whatever age you have the procedure.

So yeah, I'd like to make it illegal, but I'd be happy with a first step of at least making it illegal that any old Tom, Dick or Harry can carry it out.

Here's a fun story from Manchester about circumcision. It ended up in manslaughter charges. But only because it went wrong, not because they were doing it in the first place.

I think you will find that infants don't have a highly developed sense of right and wrong.
Kids don't have to be able to tell you. Any parent knows when an infant is suffering and with a well performed circumcision done with local anaesthetic, the level of suffering is minimal.
