City’s New Kits

14 years out of 127, doesn't make it part of our DNA, just an anomaly, unfortunately Umbro made an error in 76 changing to all blue in a time when kits lasted 2-3 seasons, they corrected that error in 85 and went back to tradition.

It took 20 more years before tradition was broken by lacoq, and only 5 more times in the last 16 years has our kit makers used blue shorts, nike being the worst perpetrators of this deviation.

14 years is nowt in terms of our kit history
Think we’re going to be stuck with this every few years now though, with new kits released each season, the designers have to do something to make it different, which is also why we often see ridiculous away kits.

Are shorts big sellers though? I mean bar kids and people who play 5 a side who over the age of 14 buys them?

would them staying white all the time really affect sales eother way?

I’d say kids are the main target market though.

Saying that you’d a traditional away kit would sell more to adults than a pink away kit would to kids.

Fuck knows tbh. Give me the job, I’d do everyone proud, blue shorts in the bin and decent away kits every year guaranteed.

Kevin Godley, Graham Gouldman and Lol Creme got it spot on. They didn't even have: http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Manchester_City/Manchester_City.htm

Seems like 1976-85 was the sky blue short era. 06/07, 11/12, 14/15, 16/17, and 21/22 being the 5 other seasons where sky blue seemed easier to wash than brilliant white. Four seasons of black/grey/navy shorts as Ardwick and early MCFC are reflected in later trims but never appear as a home main short colour.

Between 1897 and 1976 there were only white shorts. Right? Mostly sky blue or white socks.

Occasionally navy or black socks (1887-1951). Back 1987-93. The laser blue years embraced it too.

The maroon trim introduced in 62/63 (back 66-72) was class and it is good to see it back.
Sadly only seen in socks in my life time. 2010/11 obviously had it and 17/18 lesser so.

Never truly understood the 72-74 red/white and blue socks. Or the 19/20 purple bits, no matter how they're justified.

Probably a way to use maths and calculate the perfect City historical kit:

Shirt: sky blue with maroon and white trim. Navy somewhere on there, as a sponsor likely.

Shorts: white, mostly

Socks: bar white/blue with a maroon and navy trim.

Gotta be close:

When you say “occasionally” navy socks you know that’s completely contradicts the facts you’ve presented, right? Haha

It’s not really about whether the shorts are big sellers, it’s about the identity of the club.

Real Madrid would never have blue shorts the odd season to mix it up and flog a few pairs of shorts.

Liverpool, Arsenal, The Shite, Chelsea, you know instantly in your head what colour their shirts and shorts are, and it helps to generate an identifiable and iconic image.

Us playing in cOVeNtrY’s kit every few seasons does the exact opposite.

We only had hooped blue and white for 13 or so years, we’ve had navy socks for over half our history.

The quintessential City kit is sky blue shirt, white shorts, navy socks.

Just to add I’m not too bothered as long as it’s sky blue in the main and we’re winning in it!
