City and Religion

When my nanna moved to wythenshawe from cheetham hill in approx 1940 ish her dad forbade her from dating a catholic because he said they dont wash.
And when my dad played for his school football team in the 50s, when they played the local catholic school , the headmaster would make the whole school watch as they were ‘playing the enemy’

Sectarianism was alive and kicking in 1950s wythy

It's complex, like many other things. But I think we should not try to deny that sectarianism was once a thing, even in Manchester. (I don't think, post-WW2, it was ever like it was in Liverpool or Glasgae, but shadows of it certainly remained.)

I could quote anecdotes of my own, but in 2024 it's like trying to explain another world. Most younger people simply can't relate to it.

Our colours are steeped in the Masonic craft, our founder was an Irish Protestant preacher, our board has been heavily Masonic since its inception. As I tell my Rangers supporting friends, they are diet Citizens.

I think I’ve mentioned this before but a quick look at the names on the Man City Face Value Tickets and Travel page tells you we have a very large number of catholic supporters. Very few Blues care about political bigotry / sectarianism.
How can you tell by their names? They might be staunch atheists.

There’s an Orange parade every September in Manchester.

I’ve estimated mate. It’s not a perfect science.

In addition, I was a regular on the match bus from Stretford to Maine Road for many years. Half the Blues I knew were Catholics.
