City and Religion

City were founded by Conservative Freemason Protestants of the Orange Order.

Odd stories here and there of this link disappearing maybe by about the Great War or maybe earlier. It’s always been passed down the generation that we had a large following of Jewish supporters at one time. Had quite lot of fan links to Rangers through the decades n’all, but that disappeared after the UEFA Cup final at the Etihad in 2008.

But that’s about it.

We are not a religious or political set of fans at all. We do not bring either to our stands or fan culture and nor do the club. Which is a good thing.

We are the Citizens of Manchester. Mancunians. Manchester is our identity (or should be when the club aren’t arsing about with that stupid Moon gimmick or being more bothered about worldwide support than loyal local fans!).

Religion and politics are both a load of shite. If anyone in the pub with me and my mates ever brings either up, they get told to fuck off and stop being a boring ****. That’s how I want our fanbase to always be n’all.

Leave that shit to the cunts who live their lives by it (like those two sets of Glaswegian knobheads, the sad sets of sectarian shithouses). We’ll keep it cool be keeping it about Manchester and Mancunianness.

As a catholic family with blues going back generations my dad had always said that the Irish thing as he recalls it started in the 50s. My high school had plenty of match going blues and I know loads from the Manchester Irish community. In fact more than I know reds.

Leve is (or was, don’t know the area as well I used to), one of the biggest Blue areas in Mcr and it is (or was) the biggest Irish community in Mcr.

I think it’s mainly non-whites these days, but that’s^ how I used to know Leve.

Irish catholic here. I started to follow City when they had 3 Irish internationals in the team - Quinn, Phelan and Kernaghan.
I was the only City fan in my school. 70% were United I'd say.
People here don't start to follow English teams based on religion or politics though. If they want that they follow a Scottish team

I, like many of my old class mates are city supporting catholics..if tgat helps
I’m also a left footer, of Irish heritage (Though a Newton Heath lad). Dad’s parents were Irish and he was City too (He also born in Newton Heath). My mum was Irish and City due to Dad (Though she did date Alan Kelly of Preston NE as a teen)

Having once written an article on this i can tell you there are few real links but some extremely tentative ones. The most obvious one is the fact that city were started by a Protestant church, Gorton st marks. But I think more of it come from united's popularity with the Irish, and their immigrants. Bizarrely I believe Ireland's love affair with united has many of its roots with George best who was a hero to caholics even though he was Protestant. Many of Manchester and the north west's big catholic population( of which I'm one) have Irish roots and therefore a loose connection has been made between united and Catholicism. United fostered some cod-relationship with celtic in the 70s and 80s too.City's Protestant links are tentative and a reaction to that really. I suspect there are some historical geographical facts from before the slum clearances which could have had influence too. I know Salford has a big Irish population. A lot of the Jewish population have always followed city too for some reason. The main stand in the 70s was half full of Jewish blokes in sheepskins smoking cigars.
That's because you have to be a complete prick to support United. Sorry.
