City early 90s

Just watched that - Football has come on such a long way. Genuinely looks like two shit championship clubs in a relegation fight. But in the intro the two teams were both 16/1 for the cup.
And we were Hansen’s tip to win it that year!
That mad first half scramble was subsequently and infamously voted ‘the worst 30 seconds of football ever’ by an Italian magazine.
The sight of a curly haired Ian Holloway scoring a late consolation is enough to make anyone who was there feel very, very old...

I did a stadium tour and lunch a couple of years ago which was hosted by Edgehill
At lunch I asked him if the rumours of Ellis being a bully were factual
Edgehill confirmed that he was and reminisced a story of after one training session, Ellis counted the football in and said there were three missing and sent Edgehill and a couple of other youngsters out to get them with a warning of not to return without them
The balls weren't missing and Ellis left them out there for two hours searching
I always imagined Ellis to be like the ‘Finchy’ character from The Office, but without the sense of humour.

I think if Quinn had a strike partner similar to Kevin Phillips who he played with a Sunderland then City could have competed for the title. I never really understood the love some fans had for Clive Allen - he scored a few good goals (Chelsea away) but was hardly prolific (16 goals in 53 league games).

The football itself was not great - turgid long ball stuff - and it seemed that Sam Ellis, the assistant manager, set most of the tactics.

I also was shocked by what we paid for Curle (worth it) and Phelan (not so much) and the way that Hendry was got rid of because of a personality clash with Reid.

To be honest I don't think we really would have been successful with Reid and Ellis in charge. If Kendall had stayed things might have been different - his Everton teams played great passing football (first time around).
You need to factor in minutes on the pitch. He barely ever started under Reid and wasnt involved at times. But when he Came on he scored. Heath by comparison had 4 goals in 75 games mostly starts. It was a disgrace how Allen was treated. Colin Hendry the same!

Another good away day from that time

How good was Phelan? I was young when he was playing for City so can't remember enough to rate him, but was listening to him on a podcast recently and he said there was talk that Barcelona were after him at one point.
Terry was a terrier. Built like an action man, was great first half of City career. Second half had more mistakes with age. Always gave his best.

Honestly. he wouldn t have made it on the continent imo, too hard and not a good enough `baller. Which you had to be, not many premier players like that of that time would have made it on the continent.

Later the English game evolved and produced some of Europe s best players.

I hated some of the times I went to see City when Howard Kendall was the manager as we had somehow morphed into the Everton second team with people like Adrian Heath and Wayne Clark. We became more successful but I just lost my connection with the players. One of the only times that has happened for a while. It was slightly better under Peter Reed but we were little bit Kick and rush, hoofing it up to the beanpole that was Niall Quinn for David White (loved him) to run like fuck onto and score.

the football under Brian Horton with Beagrie Walsh even Nikki Sunnerved tear arsing down the wing, was a more exciting time. Made up a little bit for standing at Selhurst Park four nil down at half-time to bloody Charlton in the pouring rain! I think that was the nineties? I think that might have been the game where everyone was so bloody bored including the stewards, that at half-time some city fans ran on the pitch with a ball and started having a kickabout in the penalty area. This went on for a couple minutes until the stewards realised what was happening! Absolutely brilliant

Agree 100%, remember Allen coming on in a cup tie at Port Vale and scoring a header with his first touch. A natural goalscorer who had bagged 49 in a season for Spurs only a couple of seasons before. But Kendall and Reid preferred their old mate Heath because he ran around a lot while having the pathetic goalscoring record of any half decent full back.
Hendry was another one scapegoated by the Goodison rejects who went on to lead Blackburn to the title.
Reid managed to dine out on Kendall’s team building for a season or two but once he and Ellis started buying their own players to play their attritional hoofball it was bound to end in tears.
At least Horton got us playing some good football again
