City fan coming to Manchester seeking your help

Thanks so much for the answers guys, really helpful. I don't know where I'm sitting yet, it's part of a football tour we're doing and they handle the tickets, we also go to games at Anfield, Emirates, the Bridge and *gulp* Old Trafford, the latter being the first stop, and my first European football experience. I think we're stayng at Ramada Piccadilly wherever the hell that is. And as far as what I want to experience, all about the atmosphere. I'll always take poor comfort, poor beer and a cracking atmosphere over good comfort, good beer and poor atmosphere.

Thanks again folks.
email the club mcfc@mcfc.co.uk they love stories like these and you may just get featured in the program

Alright, you guys have convinced me to email my story to the club ... will do so after Christmas. Hopefully if I mention my career in Aus they won't hold it against me ... I'm a sports journalist!!!

Thanks again to everyone for all your assistance. While it may not seem like much to you, it's a hell of a lot of help. And just by reading the responses I realise I still have a lot of work to do on speaking like a Mancunian, hopefully a few more weeks of Coronation Street viewing will have me greeting people with "y'alright?" and calling undesirable ladies "slappers"!

Thanks again to you all!

Just a point Blake, slappers are not undesirable. You just have to wait for the right time of night or adequate consumption of alcohol for them to appear 'desirable'.
Hope that helps !

The Townley is a decent boozer mate, ask directions behind S outh Stand. Mary D's as others have said is an experiance you might never forget. Some say on here that the Kro Bar Picadilly is ok. I've heared there's acouple of Aussie bars down Deansgate.
The Bolton game should be near Full House, so you should get a decent atmosphere. Good Luck

First thing's first, mancs are too modest! Manchester is a fantastic city to visit - especially as you're gonna get to watch the game!

the lads seem to have covered match day boozers (Mary Ds after game especially - the DJ is quality) and directions and buses etc.

As for the city centre itself (where you're staying I think), there are lots of different options, depending on how much time you have.

The city centre is effectively split up into different towns or 'quarters' - all of which you should have a work through to check out the different vibes in this cosmopolitan city! They include:

The 'Millennium Quarter' (Picadilly) which is a bit cheesy and the part of town that could be anywhere in the world - full of Hard Rock Cafes and the like (not my scene) although it is worth a visit around there as it is the area that got bombed down by the IRA w@nkers in 1996....try and find before and after pics on the net before seeing the difference for real....it makes me feel proud how we rebuilt OUR CITY. Also try and find the old school post box which was next to the van containing the bomb and still looks untouched (by Marks and Spencers).

The 'Northern Quarter' (just off Picadilly - ask people for directions) which is the shabby looking bit of town but also has the most character and has a more unique 'Mancunian' feeling to it. If you are after specialist English ales and bitters and special Belgian Beers this is the place to go. Much more small scale intimate bars with the grafittid walls and the odd smell of weed in the streets adding to the feel - perfectly safe too.

For a decent foreign meal check out Manchester's Chinatown (one of the oldest and best in Europe), or even take a little trip out of town (10 mins on the 42 to Rusholme) which is where you can not only get a fantastic curry in the Little India street but is also a stone's throw away from our old home Maine Road in notorious 'Moss Side'....take a look at the old site before it turms into a meaningless shopping centre/flats and gets forgotten about!

To get a bit of culture check out the 'Castlefield area' and also Deansgate Locks. Great bars and cafes and also Science Museum and old city walls etc. I think you can also get a Barge Boat trip and stuff but never done it myself.

Speaking of old barges and canals there is also [c]anal street which is the queer village. Again not been much myself but might be worth a visit to make yourself feel better about life!

Lastly I would half recommend going to Salford Quays on the tram where there is the Lowry Museum. There is a fantastic and prestigious sports stadium there called Old Trafford where they play cricket which I imagine you like as an Ozzy. Be careful though coz there is a lump of steel that stinks of sh1t nearby tht apparantly a load of arrogant bacon face worshipping tw@ts go to watch the Salford Swampers or something.....I think they are owned by Americans with no money.

Oh yeah - defo have a pint in one of the old pubs in the 'Shambles' (Sinclair's Oyster Bar). which is again near Marks and Spencer - propoer old English style Tudor Pubs. Hope you love Manchester fella

forgot to say too:

There is a touriost/visitor centre you can ask about stuff/get maps located in Albert Square......ask people for directions to the main Library (woth a look in itself) and you can't miss it.

Hope that helps you Aussie tw@t.....aaaaarrrrrgghh! (Only jestin, you're very welcome you loyal blue)

Try this mate...Depends on how long you're here for I suppose.
Manchester is a great ity to visit..It's on our doorstep and don't always appreciate it for what it is...I told myself last year I'd have to get into town and see more of it, It's been great, visited museums, galleries etc etc that I have not known about.
Would def do the stadium tour, but don't do it on the matchday..you'll see more non match day. You can get your bits and bobs from the City store too without being rushed in and out.

As the game is midweek you'll not experience a full matchday I suppose, but as you're in Piccadilly you can pop into any of the bars in the northern quarter and then follow the crowds to the ground on a 15/20 min walk.
Get in Mary D's before they get full, which is about 6.30 mid week...go in the back room, they play loads of Manc tunes and you'll learn some words to songs that you can take home and scream into the face of a rag.

Tuesdays are shite in town after the game, it's the quietest day for bars and clubs late on. As mentioned, if you're not homophobic and just accept people as they are, try Canal Street area after the match, it'll be the liveliest place, there'll be no hassle as long as you don't act like a dick and are aggressive to anyone.

Enjoy.
