City & FFP | 2020/21 Accounts released | Revenues of £569.8m, £2.4m profit (p 2395)

They are probably in a position to compete (although I'm not sure they're flush with ready cash) but my premise has always been that they will do no more than is required to stay in the top 4. They didn't start spending hugely until they dropped out two seasons ago.

But I question whether, with the new TV deal coming up, even that's worth it to owners like the Glazers. I suspect that it is to them, as it's revenue and their main commercial deal depends on it so they'd lose cash if they weren't in it. But there might be a point where they said "That's enough".

Certainly the likes of Spurs or Liverpool's owners won't take that risk. The interesting question is what would Arsenal do if England lose the 4th CL spot.

Cheers PB. Agree that is an interesting scenario re Arsenal.

I think the assumption has always been that the Glazers will "blow other clubs out of the water" when they have paid the debt the club "acquired" to pay for the takeover, but I've always thought this unlikely. The club still owes almost half a billion ten years on and the Glazers other interests seem to need support from it and this isn't going to change in the foreseeable future. The Glazers are, of course, American and expect sporting ventures to show a profit every year, as does Kroenke at Arsenal. The complication in England is relegation, and exclusion from the top four has resembled a form of relegation because it brings with it exclusion from the CL. This may involve a willingness to spend to avoid this nasty little pitfall, but may well rule out the expenditure to compete for the major trophies. Keep the deals, keep the CL money but spend as little as possible to do it. As you point out, though, the loss of the fourth CL place could throw a real stone into United's (and Arsenal's) garden.

The assumption is that Sheikh M. will continue with his investment phase.
Surely even he will reach a point where he wants a return on his investment ? Whilst we can assume he has a CL win as his objective how does that sit with investment cf return ?

OK we have CFG and the Collar Site but perhaps our owner can also get enough advertising profile without competing to always win ie be there or there abouts.

City are already worth a considerable amount but yes, the Sheikh wants/needs consistent success at the highest level and I'm sure will fund it if needed. But we're nearly there; I think the final piece is that manager who will take us the final step. Whereas it seems that the other leading PL teams don't seem to be willing or able to spend that money to compete, unless they absolutely have to.

More likely Qatar, they're a bit less restrained and FFP is hurting PSG to a far greater extent than us when you consider the league they're in Stony.

BA, why would you think Mansour has any reason to feel outgunned by any new investors in football?

He won't feel outgunned by anyone, but ask yourself why he should help anyone who did fuck all to stand up to UEFA and the G14 Cartel attacking his honesty and propriety is simply beyond me.

Don't forget the impact of the Premier League's home grown FFP PB. - i.e. The extra TV revenue CANT be spent on wages.

We were only at -£7 million last financial year, we will be in profit this one coming. The housing investment and the rest of it will pay for itself, I suspect the Sheikh is bang on where he expected to be when he first decided on investing in Manchester and City.

City standing still or even going backwards will do him no favours, hence the CFA to secure our future.
