I cant see why City would leak it. We would surely want to keep it quiet whilst we're still negotiating. I think it was more a case of UEFA testing the water. The overall reaction in the UK press seems to be that proposed sanctions are too severe and that treating City and PSG the same is unfair. I haven't read any articles praising UEFA for taking a tough line. Not sure what the response has been like in Germany, France etc.

The delay must be slightly encouraging for us. UEFA cant be that confident about their position if they're still trying to agree a settlement.

I agree with your assessment, but not the final sentence. No-one wants this in court, no matter how strong they think their position is. It's terrible publicity for UEFA if the very first time they try to impose an sanction at all, it ends up in court. Far far better to somehow get the (allegedly) non-compliant parties to agree to accept something, even if its much watered down.

It depends on their level of commitment to the raison d'etre behind FFP. Given that the G14 tail wags the UEFA dog pretty vigorously, I'd imagine UEFA's resolve will be fairly strong. It might be excruciatingly embarrassing for them to lose in Court (and there's no guarantees they actually would), but would they rather risk that embarrassment than upset the cartel that pays the bills? I wouldn't like to call it personally. I hope they wouldn't, but given that they drafted in Gill to oversee the implementation of FFP, UEFA probably ain't calling the shots.......and there's nothing in football as bitter or vindictive as a rag, gooner or dipper being deprived of money and trophies

What you say makes sense. But then why the delay? Just get on with it and hit us with the sanction, surely? They could have done this 11 days ago now.

According to this French media source, PSG looking to renegotiate their sanctions:

Been reported by Le Parisien too. The rumour is that PSG were taken aback by the wave of anti FFP media coverage last week and attempted on Thursday to reopen negotiations with UEFA on the basis that UEFA had not formally announced the sanctions. Whether or not UEFA have agreed to renegotiate with Paris isn't clear.

What is certainly clear from what is being reported in France is that PSG had no idea that City were going to fight this quite so hard, and reading between the lines it's being suggested that PSG have changed their stance since seeing City's reaction. Hence UEFA even though their own deadline was May 5th, are yet to announce any sanctions.

Re: City & FFP (continued)

Its awful from Uefa's side they didnt say anything so far as it was their rule that settlements have to reached by Friday, and if clubs cant get a settlement the case goes to the next ruling body of Uefa where theywont ask clubs about their opinion just make a final ban/punishment.

Now its Tuesday and still all we heard are speculations, leaked infos, and lot of lies probably.

Its like they say CL draw for group stage is 30th of August and on 3rd of September we still dont know the draw results.

But my final feeling is the same, we will come to a settlement with Uefa, on somewhat "better" terms than the quoted previous ban/fine. They have to fine us now, or clearly the big lobby teams that are really behind this FFP will make Platinis life lot harder. But if they fine us very big, we wont accept it and it all can go to another level and hardly anyone can predict that. For me logic says it will be a settlement soon.

And no matter how tough sanction it will be, Wenger and the likes of Rummenigge will come out and say FFP cant be respected.:))

For Wenger I really hope that fat face Bruce gets glory against Arsenal in Fa final. Surely that wont be "fair" according to Wenger but thats what I hope.

Would surprise me if Sheikh Mansour hasn't picked up the phone to the Qataris and had a quick natter.

My guess is that UEFA have f****d up massively here and it wouldn't surprise me if the lawyers of both clubs haven't met to discuss a pincer type movement. Although the concept of FFP is sensible there are so many flaws and loopholes in it that it isn't workable in its present format.

House of cards. Just make sure we pull the right one away.

Re: City & FFP (continued)

Not bothered going back and looking for my post but Steven, the Oxford law professor who wrote that paper on how EU law and FFP could co-exist got back to me on how UEFA could justify the linked sanctions :
Lots of open questions!

I think the argument would probably be that Man City and PSG don't have precarious finances only because they have sources of income that are unrelated to their earning power as a football club - i.e. that they are the recipients of 'financial doping'. So the sanction is meant to deter/ punish, under an assumption that they can pay because they have resources in the background which FFP treats as in effect illegitimate

It's all a bit crude/ odd, i admit

He was playing Devil's advocate with that paper methinks.

Not sure what the question was to the answer above ;-) but my understanding is that he is saying we are being punished excessively for having rich owners and, furthermore, he seems to think this is strange (potentially unworkable is the impression I get).

Does that sum it up?

If it's true that PSG are trying to re-negotiate then that's very interesting, not to mention piss funny into the bargain.

Probably wishful thinking on my part but I'm hoping that the UEFA suits are now running round like headless chickens wondering what the hell to do because they're worrying about the threat of legal action from both City and PSG.

Perhaps UEFA thought everyone would accept their punishments with a minimum of fuss but if City believe we haven't broken the rules then why should we?

I don't think that arsenal will do anything their main sponsor and biggest commercial payment comes from someone who was stood next to sheikh Mansour eating cake to celebrate City's victory
