Are we going to just China or the likes of Japan too?

I wonder how many Chinese supporters we have, when you consider we used to have the likes of Sun Jihai combined with our new status in the world I wouldn't be surprised to see a few knocking about.

I am from China living in Lincoln. I started 'supporting' City when Sun Jihai was signed, but admittedly, I have never been to a City game (in fact any English football game). Since then I have been following City via TV and more importantly Bluemoon. Over the years, I have learned the history of the Club, the players, the sentiment, the humor with self-deprecation and of course the hatred (towards the other team). The thing I appreciate the most is the 'exclusiveness', i.e. City is supported by the local Manchester people in the times of high and low. However, this is also the 'thing' that put me off. I could go to one or two game as 'a good weekend break', but the City culture I have developed myself would not allow me to do this. In addition, I would not like to be 'looked' as a tourist. In a sense, I wish City did not have the money and we struggled in the league as we always did so I can 'indulge' myself in the mood of frustration, despair, blaming and self-deprecation. So that I can shamelessly claim that I am no glory hunter.

I don't think these 'good' days will never come back and definitely there will be more Chinese people 'jump the bandwagon'. However, this 'exclusive' culture (at least I have experienced on Bluemoon) will definitely put off people like me to become a fan. To become a 'big' club at the international level, there is something need to be done outside the games. Maybe something similar to the exploitation of 'Munich' incident and their 'never say never' attitude.

Anyway, I hope one day I can move to live closer to Manchester so that I can become a 'proper' supporter.

You was probably born in Lincoln and have been supporting/glory hunting the rag scum from the comfort of your armchair since you stopped supporting the bin dippers circa 1999.....your post is a failiure, you are a failiure and the bunch of cunts you follow will also fail when it comes to winning the league.

Ni bu shi zhong guo ren. Ni yao pian wo men ma?

I don't think they are Chinese. The syntax is all wrong for a person who moved from China. The person who wrote that was born in the UK or have been living their for a long ass time.

And damn, I am so stoked about this match. A City match an hours flight away, Awesome!

wo bu pian ren! wo shi zhong guo ren! It is not a crime for a football fan to be able to construct a sentence and spell correctly.

I am no WUM. I can't stand rags' cheesy propaganda before I came to the UK anyway and the mentality of glory hunters of many of my fellow Chinese. A few years back, I was constantly mocked by my mates as there were few City fans in Lincoln or in China and we were shit then, but I did not mind. To me, the essence of supporting City is different from being a rag. But now, I expect us to win before every game, and fook me, that makes me even more nervous for every match than before.

People in China do not know much about English football and they do not have that much connection to the clubs, via parents or uncle or mates or local influence, as you have here, so to 'make' them to support City, we will need to create some 'connections' for them. Glory can be very useful to pull Chinese fans in. What rags have been doing well is the exploitation of their so-called history and 'spirit' (which disgusts me). By doing this, they have created a culture within their fans in China, which also pull their fans together. My point is that City is going global and apart the things on the pitch, we need to do some clever marketing not only just showing off the glory (which we will get at the end of the season) but also the essence of the City culture that I have learned and enjoyed. That may take time but I would love to see more Chinese appreciate City the way as everyone does here.

We do not like sweet and sour chicken (or at least not for the place where I come from). They are made for the British people here!

Or is this a tester for me?

Probably best not to head to America again for a little while. The usual "big 4" have such an establishment here it's sad. The majority of Americans have no clue whats going on in Europe anyways (sports or otherwise) and learning those 4 teams took 15 years to accomplish. Most americans that can name the 4 or 5 teams believes this makes them "cultured" and makes them think they are well traveled. It's pretty hilarious. This is an article on www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com but you can pretty much just rename it to www.stuffamericansthinktheylike.com. I also took the liberty of changing the words "white person" to "American".

#80 The Idea of Soccer
March 3, 2008 by clander

Many Americans will tell you that they are very into soccer. But be careful, it’s a trap.

If you then attempt to engage them about your favorite soccer team or talk about famous moments in soccer history, you are likely to be met with blank stares. This is because Americans don’t actually enjoy watching soccer, they just like telling their friends that they are into it.

In fact, the main reason Americans like soccer is so they can buy a new scarf. As you may or may not know, many soccer teams issue special scarves, and Americans cannot get enough of them!

Most Americans choose a favorite soccer team based on either a study abroad experience or a particularly long vacation to Europe or South America. When they return, they like to tell their friends about how great “football” is and that they are committed to ‘getting more into’ now that they have returned home.

Some white people take this charade so far as to actually play in adult soccer leagues or attend a local professional match.

The best method for exploiting this is to ask an American who their favorite football team is and how they came to be fans. This will allow them to tell you about their time abroad and feel as though they have impressed you with their knowledge. Once they have finished talking, it is acceptable to ask for favors.

*and before the hate starts flying in, I am a yank, and I understand a lot of people in your group of friends know a lot about european football. I am just saying the majority of Americans.

I hate all this shop window stuff - I used to slag the rags off when they did it - surely we don't need the cash.

I went for the friendlies in Shanghai in 2006, spent about 10 days there and went onto Beijing for 4 days before flying home.

Anyone thinking about going - do it!

over the last 3 years I've been working on and off in china. I always do a straw poll of my students when I'm there and it's safe to say we don't have much of a fan base. Sun Jihai however is a household name and we should be exploiting that for all it's worth.

The economy of scale says if we want to break even one day we need to be well placed in the biggest market in the world.
