CITY: SHOWSEC, Atmosphere, & Blatant Bullying.

Not all Showsec stewards are wankers of course but some are, and IMO a lot of it comes from the top of that organisation.

When I went to The Cure gig at the Arena at the back end of November I witnessed the most inept organisation and stewarding ever at a concert from these incompetent twats. Not for the first time we had standing tickets for a gig there, and turned up a good 15 minutes before The Cure came on. The woman who scanned our tickets at the entrance told us to use the entrance behind her to get to the floor. Great we thought, as there was absolutely no queue, but when we got to that entrance the steward there told us to use one of the other entrances further round as they weren't letting any more in through that door. The next couple we got to both had long queues so we proceeded to the next where again there was no queue, only to be told by the steward there that we couldn't use it and that we should proceed to the next one. It was at this point that I admittedly started getting irate and told him that we were being sent from pillar to post and it wasn't on. Turns out this Showsec steward is a season ticket holder at City who is in our block and he recognised me - he asked me to pipe down which I did and said he'd see me on Saturday for the Chelsea game. Anyway, we went to the next entrance as advised by him and somewhat astonishingly, the female steward there told us we weren't allowed in that entrance at which point we were getting seriously pissed off along with several others who had been sent on the same wild goose chase. The woman was getting it in the neck a fair bit and radioed for back-up but insisted we couldn't use that entrance and that we should double back and use one of the others. We went back to the entrance where the City supporting steward was and told him that they weren't letting anybody in that entrance either and he said there was nothing he could do and that we should keep working our way round. By that time though, the queues at the other entrances were horrendous and it wasn't helped by the fact that they were taking ticket holders with both seating and standing tickets in the entrances which was slowing the process down even further. The Cure had already taken to the stage at that point, and it took us another half an hour or so to get onto the floor for a gig where we'd shelled out the best part of £60 a ticket. While we were in the queue we got some bullshit story off one of the Showsec supervisors who said once the gig starts, they can only allow people with standing tickets through 2 entrances at the back of the arena as it blocks the views of those that are seated. Firstly, the band hadn't even taken to the stage when they started closing off entrances and secondly, we were still blocking the view of seated punters while using the 2 entrances at the back. Frankly, he was spouting utter bollocks.

Anyway, I caught up with the City-supporting steward prior to the Chelsea home game and he blamed it on too many people turning up too late - I disagreed, saying many people were already inside the venue before The Cure came on. I asked him how he'd like it if he turned up for a City game 15 minutes before kick-off, only to be told that he couldn't use his usual entrance to get to his seat and was then sent on a wild goose chase to entrance after entrance, eventually only getting to his seat half an hour after the game started. Needless to say, there wasn't much of a response.

I am that Showsec steward from 115 who spoke to you at Cure and Chelsea game, the problem stems from the Standing section people join the seating queues and it clogs up, its the same at Etihad on concerts , feel free to meet me again ill explain in more detail, i appreciate your anger but at most concerts the floor is nearly full at Arena by the time the seat people arrive, Cure was a one off and maybe caused by people arriving at 730-7.45 thinking Cure would be on at 830-9pm when most bands at Arena come on 20.45-21.15pm.

Slightly off the standing issue, but an experience with Showsec on Monday, I'm a 53 year old woman going to the game with her grandson, taking some belated Christmas presents for a friend at the game. They were wrapped up in Christmas paper, in a Christmas gift bag. The Showsec staff member said I couldn't take them in. I got them out of their gift bag and showed what was quite obviously a jar (jam) and tin (hot chocolate) and a small wrapping (lip salve). He then said I could only take them in if fully unwrapped. I tried to take enough of the wrapping off to show the content and brand, so it was quite clear they were a jar of jam, hot chocolate and a lip salve. Still not OK. The whole of the wrapping had to removed. By this time my grandson had gone in and was panicking because he couldn't see me, the queue was being held up and I was becoming increasingly upset. I'm still baffled as to the point of the exercise. It was obviously not alcohol or drugs. It was embarrassing and unnecessary

Have you ever heard of terrorists?

Fuck me it's a bring and buy sale now.

It's a football ground. A football ground that needs to have security as there appears to be a lot of wars on at the moment and a few idiots are blowing stuff up. This would be the response of any security staff and any venue.

"Sorry Boss, she brought it in wrapped."

Bimbo.

I got in with a twin pack of Waitrose All Butter French Crossiants stuffed inside my jacket, and partly under my arm, on Monday.

I was frisked, searched, scanned, I might as well have had an internal, and the daft t*** missed it.

And while we're still at it Mr high and mighty. Your reply to the other poster.

I once also had my camera scanned in my pocket at the turnstiles, and the hand held scanning device never bleeped. The camera is made of metal.

And while we're still at it, I've seen fans searched in-front of me, and I've been waved through, while the Stewards were talking.

It's a f***ing farce.

If you, City, or Showsec can give me a general description of what a suicide bomber or a gun-man looks like before he or she blows himself or herself up, or before they shoot people waiting in the queues outside the ground, then I'll keep an eye out for them.

Some of the queues have been absolutely shocking this season, with 1000's of fans waiting to get inside. A suicide bomber, or some f***ing loon with a gun, couldn't ask for anything more.

I have heard of terrorists and I am aware of security threats. But my slightly opened present, quite obviously a jam jar, is no greater threat than the guys next to me with his flask and sandwich box, which he takes in every week. Its either everything or nothing. In fact I would say a flask of boiling hot liquid is a greater risk.

Can you explain the strategy for targeting elderly people standing in a block of a 1000 people standing?

No i cant but as a season ticket holder im not working, each venue has different rules but they all come from the client
So its club policy to reduce the age of the fan base by chucking out anybody over 60 who dares to stand up in a stand full of people standing.

Hiya mate. Yes, you explained that when we spoke at the Chelsea game and you're quite correct that The Cure were on a lot earlier than most bands, and I've no doubt that some fans were caught out by the early start time. To be fair though, that's a different issue to being instructed to use different entrances and upon arriving at those entrances being told we can't use them after all. I appreciate you guys are at the sharp end and have to then deal with irate punters when the breakdown in communication has no doubt happened higher up the chain. The supervisor we spoke to, while not being too nasty, was utterly clueless and his explanation didn't add up whatsoever. In any case, I can't understand why a simple contingency wasn't employed as the crowds built up where punters were sent to the other entrances that had previously been deemed out of bounds - this could've been done by one of the supervisors putting out a message to yourself and the other stewards.
