City v Everton post match

The last match I saw was the game against Bournemouth, then we went on holiday for a fortnight and I missed the games against Swansea, Spurs and Celtic. The only source of news I had wad the edition of the Daily Mail produced for expats on the Costa del Sol. Not surprisingly I was fed reports of a team in crisis and a manager who had been revealed as a fraud! So I settled back to watch the match yesterday with feelings of some trepidation. I know Everton are a good side with a very good manager who has concentrated on the defence after the neglect of the Martinez years. But my feelings of trpidation must have lasted ten minutes at most. The team had lost none of its energy, dynamism, tactical nous and technical brilliance (especially Silva). Everton never got out of their own half for much of the first half, but this was not by design, this was because we smothered them in midfield and Sane and Sterling pegged their full backs right back. Everton were forced back and play was concentrated around their box. They are a well organised team and it is naive to believe that City would create a hat full of chances. Indeed the Everton defence (and midfield and attack!) cut out crosses and blocked shots. Had KdB put the penalty away the first half would have been highly satisfactory. The second half was a little more competitive but City continued to play well and have shots blockd by the serried ranks of Everton defenders ... and then it happened. I'm sure that Pep can analyse it and identify City errors, but I can't. The ball ran kindly for Everton but Lukaku took his goal very well indeed. A real sickener, especially when Sergio had yet another penalty saved. I think that Pep showed his mettle at this point. Sane had had a good day (on both flanks) but was fading a little - bringing on Nollito was a good move, but playing him down the middle was superb. KdB put his howitzer of a shot in, coming in from the left but it was Nollito down the middle who nodded in the equaliser. A very good performance by all the team, a truly resilient performance from Everton (who may well compete for a top four finish) ut if we are worried about anything it's that a comfortable victory turned into a draw because we missed two MORE penalties. But crisis? Not on your life!

Couldn't have put it better myself! Excellent take on the game. We all want to win every game but I remember thinking they were fighting so hard defensively that we needed to produce a special finish to get past them. KDB nearly did to be fair and the penalties, well, enough said there!

Can I just say I fucking hate Everton. They are no better than a Stoke, Palace etc. Dirty, cynical and shit. I also hate their dreary fans with their moronic one chant. I sincerely hope we put ten past them one day.
Oh and I thought we were great and on another day would have made me very happy because we really should have murdered them.

Not many blaming Stones though for his stupidity in trying to intercept a ball like that on the half way line.
I blamed him, and it wasn't on the half way, it was 5-10 yards into their half.

When you only have 3 defenders (our game plan yesterday) losing one from a suicidal effort to intercept the ball is bad news, if the other is jogging back from being too far forward, then its poor planning for me. I've been told on here that our defending was good yesterday, it wasn't it was poor, they had 3 attacks of note, scored one, and could easily have scored twice, I've also said that Clichy was our best defender, because he is a defender first and foremost, and concentrates on it, so its no surprise that he was the one trying to cut off Lukaku, whilst the other 2 were nowhere to be seen.

I fully understand what Pep wants from the defenders, and I'm all in favour, but I hope he's telling them at training tomorrow, that suicidal attempts have no place in this team, because both Stones (for the goal), and Otamendi minutes earlier put us in trouble with it, and when we are so pushed forward against a team that clearly came to counter attack, it is suicidal.

All of that said, you also can't afford to be missing 2 penalties in any game at the top level, especially tight games, and despite playing some very good football, we only got a point, and the blame lies at both ends of the pitch for not winning, if Stones hadn't dived in and missed, we win 1-0, had we scored either penalty we win 2-1 (or 3-1).

Some will accuse me expecting perfection, but I imagine that Pep also expects perfection, and while the football yesterday was sublime at times, we didn't win, and it wasn't just down to their keeper being inspired, as he was, it was down to our mistakes too.
