City v Ipswich 1981 FA Cup Semi

Right at the top of the Holt End next to the Ipswich fans. Brilliant day! Ipswich fans were sound that day unlike Tottenham in the final.

This will always be one of my favourite City matches ever and one of those iconic City goals I will never tire of seeing again.
Was given a ticket the previous week on the way back from a game against Norwich, was absolutely made up (as others have said, City getting into an FA Cup Semi Final was a big deal at the time) Had a ticket at the Witton End ?(usual away end at the time) but was able to persuade a steward to let me go on the Holte End with a mate instead ,being a 'wee nipper' at the time ( I was 15 ,maybe not that young but my parents weren't that happy about me attending 'away' games at the time due to the 'trouble' at matches at the time).
Ipswich were strong favourites and going for 'the double, 'don't remember too much about the match itself really. Brilliant atmosphere, one of the most manic celebrations ever when we scored. Saw Paul Power take the shot but didn't see it hit the net just remember being 'transported' several yards accross the terrace (looking back it really was like 'sardines' at times!).
Very, very nervous for remainder of extra time. Remember several renditions of 'We're on the march with John Bonds army' 'Gerry Gow, Gerry Gow, Gerry Gow' and 'I'm dreaming of a blue Wembley' (although the lyrics in that song weren't meant literally it was sensibly dropped a while later).
Being my pre '8 pints before the match to numb the pain' days ,one of the other abiding memories was going to a Wimpy in Birmingham before the game (haven't seen one for years do they still exist?).

Awesome game & memory !
Playing an outstanding ipswich team ,we didn't stand a chance.
Just a formality everyone thought, except for the city team . Roared on by an outstanding city following they gave everything they had, on a cup run (esp in the holte end) all the way through to the final .
What a freekick by Paul Power !
Still won't watch the spurs game though & still remember the feeling & silence afterwards getting on a train back to Manchester at daft oclock , nearly in tears after ricky villa goal.

Not this game but certainly in that years cup run

was with the RAF in Norfolk at the time with another big blue - we were drawn away to Peterborough - neither of us could drive but another 'mate' could

we asked him to take us - from memory it was a midweek game - a round trip of about 120 miles -

'Yeah I'll take you as long as you pay for the petrol' - No problem, 'and pay my way in' - Err o.k. 'and buy me something to eat' - Fuckin Hell 'and buy me 4 cans for when we get back seeing as how i'm driving'

Needless to say we didn't make it
peterboro was scary ,packed us in like sardines & lucky no casualties behind the goal that day !

Fantastic day, part of an iconic cup run (the most memorable and enjoyable ever) , when the FA cup really did matter to fans and players alike. Like many others, had the perfect view of Paul Powers free kick from the packed and jubilant Holte End, this goal and the equaliser at Goodison in the previous round are 2 of my favourite City goals and games ever - thank you Mr Paul Power.

I was 19 and remember the M6 being standstill and all the City fans getting out of their cars dancing and singing across the three lanes - can you imagine that happening today in these woke times? A brilliant day, fantastic, breathless reaction to PP's free kick from the entire away end.
