City @ Vale Park

I went our 3 FA cup games that season.
All away.
Burnley
Port Vale
Notts County..... Gary Lund i think the cnut was called.
The rags won the cup the year before after being drawn away in every round.
Some of us thought fate was going to let us emulate it.... oh how wrong we were
Great cup run, Hendry at Burnley, went with my dad and stood on side bit- limbs when it went in!
How the fucking hell we didn’t beat County. Battered them.

Exactly. I was in the bit down the side; Royle was getting loads of abuse. We were absolute dogshit. Port Vale fans, including scarfers getting pummelled after the game - violent, nasty, horrible day. You could sense the dawning realisation- we really could go down. And we really did.
I was up the side too, low down terrace. I've got Kinkladze in my head. I think I have a single memory of him in that calaret/white/navy kit just walking around in front of us with his head down. Was he sub or was he subbed? Something happened. I've a feeling it might have been the game where Royle started dropping him. I remember City's firm walking down the hill after with Port Vales's firm alongside them and police keeping them apart. People talk aboout our lowest points but thar period at the end of that season was up there with them. Seem to remember a hammering at Reading not long after that that almost sealed our fate.

Was in the Burnley end, so was kicked out with lots of others early in the game.
Port Vale was mint when Clive came on and scored in front of us.
And ditto Notts County.
How we lost that game I'll never know

Also went all three games

The Port Vale game me and a mate took two girls from Durham we had met in Majorca.

They looked scared and did not know what had happened when Clive scored, the place went mental.

March 98, we probably had 5k there and we were utter gash. Scrapping everywhere before, during and after IIRC
Yet the Youtube **** will point to no history ...............seriously how many of the clubs at the top level would still follow them in them numbers during the 90s ??????

Wasn't there a game in the 1999-2000 promotion season when Wright-Phillips thought he'd scored his first goal for City, only for it to be chalked off as an own goal? The day Shaun had to wear an XL shirt even though he was 5ft 4in. Think Danny Granville scored the other goal.

Remember winning 3 1 in the cup under Howard Kendal, City there in huge numbers. Can't remember too much due to an amazing pub crawl in Newcastle Under Lyme and my mates wife making space cake for us.
It was 2-1 under Reid. He reluctantly subbed Allen on to the field as we were chanting for him to come on - scored seconds later with his first touch from a corner.
Darren Beckford scored for Vale

Yep 3-0 at Elms Park midweek game I managed to somehow get in their main stand. Fucked off to the boozer next to the ground at half time as we were already 2-0 down against another relegation favourite. Absolutely fucking shit that team. Fucking fucking shit.

I’d forgotten who scored their 2nd that night - no googling !

I wrote about that particular game in KotK a long time ago and it remains (for me at least) possibly the worst City performance of my lifetime. It was Reading’s last season at Elm Park and I took a Derby County supporting mate of mine, who lived in nearby Datchet. He didn’t know whether to laugh or console me, we were so bad. He just kept saying “Oh dear” and “Dear oh dear” and blowing his cheeks out over and over. I know we were bad a lot in those days (Wycombe and Stockport away, plus a 0-0 draw at home to a Bristol Rovers team that included half a dozen teenagers, are also in my top ten truly minging City performances - thankfully I missed the Bury and Lincoln debacles), but that game at Reading was extra special

Everyone was in a bad mood from even before the kick off, city fighting each other in the stands and Kinky walking around as if he’s given up is what I remember.

Thanks for that, like I said I was so out of it that weekend can remember very little, blame space cake and Marstons Pedigree and now old age.

That was a bad night out. I was with Dave Wallace and trying to sell KK after game got the usual suggestions as to where we might shove them. - Not sure either of us picked the teams or the tactics, but there you go.
