How about THE ARDWICK END ? Which in time could become known just as THE ARDWICK.

It`s got a nice ring to it, sounds better than a point on a compass (South Stand), and relates to our history (in 1894 Ardwick AFC reformed as Manchester City Football Club) as well as being broadly in the direction of the existing district of Ardwick.

What do you thinK?
 
The North stand at Maine Road stood for many years and no one whinged about that.

Leave The South stand as it is. Either that or ask every single person who stands or sits there what THEY THINK.

Not a few people on an Internet site where pretty much the majority don't go to games.

It will be named after a sponsor probably anyway for more dosh. As when it was The Key 103 Stand.

This is a great idea. I would support this.
 
i really like the idea of the ardwick end or gorton end. something that links to our past. the 1894 group and this forum could help in getting the club to listen ?
 
One for Gary James I am sure I somewhere once read this but wasn't St Marks first ever game recorded as being at "near clowes street" maybe that could be a suggestion or clowes st end though Gorton is still my favourite idea

You can actually see (roughly) the site where the first known game was 'probably' played from the upstairs atrium areas of the new stand. Basically, the pitch is believed to have been on land next to the Union Ironworks on a Thomas St (now Wenlock Way). The old ICL/Fujitsu tower is next to that site. So, when you look south from the stand you can see that block.

I say 'probably' played because none of the reports, articles and mentions from 1880 say specifically, but that's where I'm convinced it was played - I explain why in Amazon product ASIN B00M74AHNW Actually, the section on City's formative years is free to read via Amazon's Look Inside function via that link. Anyone wondering about significance of Gorton, St Marks etc should have a read of that. Thanks

Support is growing for the opportunity to be taken now, with the new upper tier opening, to re-name the South Stand .
THE ARDWICK END - many fans agree with this suggestion to give the END a real identity and a name with meaning.

Having listened to lots of fans and discussed this with pals all agree that THE ARDWICK END would be a great name for the reasons set out below. I also firmly believe that we should have names for all 4 stands rather than bland points on a compass and that two of them should be called ENDS.

We already have THE COLIN BELL STAND (West)

Here are suggestions for the other three, to be named when the time is right.

(1) THE ARDWICK END (South)

(2) THE KIPPAX (East)

(3) THE TRAUTMANN END (North)

I appreciate that there is bound to be a debate about (2) and (3) above.

We must also find an appropriate way of recognising Tony Book who is at least as deserving as Bert but unfortunately it simply does not work well to name a stand the Book End or the Book Stand.

Reasons for THE ARDWICK END

* MANCHESTER CITY FC were formed in 1894 directly from Ardwick AFC;
* CITY`s first ground was formerly that of Ardwick`s, located off Hyde Road, Ardwick;
*the site of CITY`s first ground can still be seen from a main railway line into Piccadilly Station and from Ardwick Railway Station;
* Ardwick, as an area, is south west of the South Stand ,walking distance from THE ETIHAD where thousands pass through to every home match, and can probably be seen from the new stand;
*the name of ARDWICK resonates with CITY`s history;
* the district of Ardwick is well known (Ardwick Green, Ardwick Apollo,Ardwick Lads` Club, Fort Ardwick (Coverdale Crescent) and will always exist in Manchester.
* The name easily lends itself to songs and chants.
* the 1894 Group will be going from strength to strength in the new end - 1894 was when CITY were formed from ARDWICK.
* ARDWICK links the past, present and the future and resonates more than any other alternative.
 
Personally, I don't think we should name it after anyone, but if others do and want to link it to history then Josh Parlby would be an excellent choice. The club wouldn't exist without his transformational leadership in 1894. Yes, a key figure and maybe deserving of recognition in another way, however the Josh Parlby End / Stand is not likely to resonate with our fans in the same manner as most of the alternatives. My opinion is that the Josh Parlby Stand / End would not be an excellent choice / link to a stand /end. The information and links that you promote are interesting.

Personally, I think we can do better at CITY than stick with the generic name of the South Stand. THE ARDWICK END suggestion is not the name of a person. A rationale has been set out. Some will agree, some not. It would be good to understand as part of the debate if there is support for the suggestion (many have said they like the name - THE ARDWICK END) , or not, and if not, why and what would be better.
