City vs Bayern Munich Post match Thread

Pellegrini's biggest mistake was thinking we were good enough to slug it out toe to toe with Bayern. It was like a lightweight boxer in the ring with a heavyweight,we got battered all over the place. He should have packed the midfield and left just Aguro up front and hope we could frustrate and contain them and hit them on the break or from a set piece.

For a supposed top international coach to not forsee this before the game is stupid,to not change it after the first few minutes when it was obvious to everybody in the stadium we were getting swamped is bloody criminal!

This is the system that saw Cardiff and bloody Villa score three goals against us,what did he think fucking Bayern would do facing the same system?Exactly what they did, overran us and it could have been ten.

have to agree.

i got in from work 20 mins in and realised by 25 mins we need another midfielder in the middle.

when he finally brought silva on we looked better.

We are just football fans but we could see it,why couldn't a supposed top notch experianced coach being paid good money not see it and address it?That for me is the worrying part!

How on earth did chelsea manage to get 2-2 in Europa cup against bayern....Wasnt it full strength Bayern, if it was thn i fear Jose may outsmart us also

From the minute I read the team sheet on Twitter I was terrified. It was top heavy (with the wrong striker too), lop sided (nasri vs navas) and had two full backs who hadn't played in weeks.

From that half 6 announcement onwards Pep had a completely obvious blueprint of how to dominate us.

It turns out the team that won the tournament we went out bottom of the group in are better than us.

I'm glad we've cleared that up now and Pellegrini can keep on "learning".

Lol :)

Future looks good at least

Bayern Munich had no answer for City’s
midfield dominance and killer passes
and could only create a smattering of
chances, the best one of the half
headed well wide from close range (EDS)

Not gonna make any excuses but Chelsea played Bayern very well, Mou told them to sit back and take what Bayern gave them and it almost worked. Of course ill mention that Bayern would have done better if Martinez was fully fit cause he was a boss after he was subbed and Schweinstiger was injured but Chelsea deserve some praise. Some people dont think "parking the bus" is a tactic but all i kno about it is that it works from time to time....

We know that but do we want to play defensive football?

Celtic kept two banks of 4 against Barcelona and restricted them, but you don't progress that way.

I thought that our back 4 defended very well in the 1st half. For all Bayern's dominance, they had very few attempts on our goal in the 1st half. They pressed high and dominated the midfield

That could have left them vulnerable defensively, but we were too timid to threaten them.

We played the exact same system against Utd and destroyed them. They had more numbers in midfield.

You don't always have to match up one for one with your opponents.

The problem is that City go into Eurpean games with a millstone around our necks, and then when you go a goal down against the European Champions they just caved in.

That's the key question here, I think. Of course, in hindsight, given the mauling we got, it's easy to say we should have flooded the midfield, looked to match up, defended deep, set out for a draw etc .. - the outcome could barely have been worse. But Pellegrini obviously believes in attacking football, obviously wants us to go out and try and impose ourselves on the opposition from the start, and has, it seems pretty clear, been brought in with the remit to get us playing that way. When it goes wrong, of course, he is always going to be accused of being naive.

Kind of the same with the substitutions/changes - he could have hooked Dzeko after 15 minutes and brought on Milner, and it might have helped in limiting the damage. Unlikely to have ever put us in a position to get back into the match though.

That's not to say I think the tactics were right - on the contrary, I thought he got it wrong in playing Navas in particular, and that the 4 in midfield were too flat - (although his hands were perhaps tied by not having Jovetic and/or Silva available from the start). But I also agree with the above that the mental element came into play, too - wasn't just the tactics, wasn't just mentality, but rather (as ever) a bit of both.

And that statement means absolutely fuck all.Did we think we were better than Bayern or could outplay them on their terms? No.Could we draw or beat them if we had applied the right tactics from the off and not conceeded three preventable goals?Possibly.

My point was a coach of sixty years of age with a proven track record in the champions league got it horribly wrong,in spite of watching poor teams such as Cardiff and Villa score three goals against applying a similar formation and tactics. So he then plays the same way against arguably the best team in the world right now.Stupidity and insanity.
This

It galls me to hear people say BM are far superior to us? Match us up player for player and I'd say we were more than a match for them. Where we fell short was in the tactical battle, I don't for one minute think that it was a lack of desire and heart from the players. They needed leadership and there was none, they needed an alternative plan when it was obvious Plan A wasn't working and there wasn't one.

After what I witnessed, if I was playing I'd have lost heart with what was happening around me. The next 4 matches will tell us all we need to know about our new holistic approach. Txiki said it would be 4-3-3 but we're playing a 4-4-2, I wonder if a non-interference agreement is part of MP's contract?

Anyway, it's all a bit strange and two days later, I'm still in shock.
