not sensational but hopefully that's the end of the 'no shape, no system' criticism. hopefully it's the beginning of us taking that stuff for granted.
I reckon this formation is difficult to play, but if we get it right, we're laughing. I hope it's dawning on people that everyone has to be able to play a bit now, everyone has to be able to contribute in attack, and everyone has to be able to cover the whole pitch, run up and down time after time.
We are very narrow in defence and midfield, which leads to us being pulled about a little too much for my liking, but it's worse for the opponent, we really stretched Valencia, they looked shattered long before the final whistle.
It'll be extremely difficult for an opponent to just sit back and try to soak us up, and very dangerous for them to move forward in numbers.
The speed of the fullbacks makes a big difference, not to mention both of them can deliver fantastic crosses, they will be a big weapon.
The midfielders are getting forward more and more, even De Jong was involved around their penalty area. I personally like the idea of Yaya, Milner and Barry as the three but there are plenty of workable combinations on paper. they haven't quite figured out who can go forward, when they can go forward and when they have to stay, but touch wood it will come.
And the strikers and Silva are pretty much free to combine in any way they like. 30 minutes of Tevez and Silva was a glimpse into the future, they're so comfortable in tight areas, defenders will be shitting themselves at the thought of having to face that. AJ wasn't far behind them. Add another genius like Balotelli to the mix...
SWP looks a bit ungainly on the ball by comparison but I think he is a perfect option to have on the bench. left backs often attack more and more as the game goes on, stick on a quick, orthodox right-winger and you can turn the situation to your advantage. I like him in the centre or the left as well, he can still use his pace to attack from any position on the pitch, and his shooting is always a threat.
Disappointed to see the long kick from the keeper is here to stay, but I guess we have to play the percentages and avoid getting bogged down in the back line.
