I think most Americans fall into three categories.
1) people that just want to see Haaland and don’t know anyone else, so won’t care
2) In the know fans who didn’t expect anyone else to go but are happy to see the academy/next gen
3) in the know fans who didn’t buy tickets because they knew most players wouldn’t travel
I wish that were indeed the case, but I have seen some rather ridiculous comments already, similar to what
@jamielowndes mentioned.
It is only social media, though, so hopefully the actual fans in attendance are more understanding.
I will say that the travelling squad was really always going to be like this given the Euros and Copa America being played before the tour kicked off so it is slightly strange that the club choose to base the tour in the US this summer, rather than around Europe, where fans would have likely been more interested in watching the youth players. Having the EDS squad plus a few senior team players roaming around America (and potentially losing more than we normally due in preseason) does seem a bit of an underwhelming tour and not necessarily a big marketing win for the club, which is really the only point to these overseas tours. I am not sure how much of the tour revenue is guaranteed, though, so perhaps the financial side does work out, at least for the club (though, perhaps not the fans or the broader impact to the “brand”).
I am personally looking forward to watching the matches—why wouldn’t I be, as I always enjoy watching our up-and-coming talent—but I do understand others’ more reasonable comments about not being sure it is worth the cost to go see matches. Though, I think some of the more hyperbolic and vitriolic comments on social media are uncalled for, as anyone with a brain should have foreseen this being the likely squad composition.
