NB we've done this thread before, went to about 100 pages every track a classic
He was good but Bobby Smith was “the man” in The Spinners.Love Phillipe Wynnes voice on Rubberband Man, in fact on any Detroit Spinners track
I’m a big fan of Rock/Metal and Prog music so maybe I surprise even myself by having a very soft spot for some Classic R&B/Soul.
Here are my Sweet Top Six in no order.
The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding.
Your Love is taking me higher and The Sweetest Feeling - Jackie Wilson.
Under the Boardwalk and Saturday Night at the Movies - The Drifters.
Just give me a little more time -Chairman of the Board.
any other recommendations out there ?
PJ only just noticed this thread. Your post has brought up lots of emotions. I lost my big sister a few months back and she was a big Drifters fan so I have many many fond memories of 'listening in' to her playing those songs, and some of the others you mention, when I was little :-)
If I remember correctly Bruce Willis committed a crime against music in the 80s covering Under the Boardwalk.
One artist I'd recommend if you're not familiar is William Bell. He's not as famous as some of the other Stax greats but he should be more widely known than he probably is. Amongst other things, along with Booker T, he co-write Born Under a Bad Sign which became a big blues hit for Albert King. He also wrote and had a hit with Private Number. Great voice and lots of great songs. Still with us and even got a Grammy for his last album in 2016.
Particularly liked the Teddy Prendergrass years with the BluenotesHarold Melvin and the bluenotes
