Classic Rock (Phil Collins lives, run for the hills)

And the clubs we frequented to hear it in:

The Phoenix (where I met Mrs Trick in 1987)
Jilly's (original on Gore St ... only went in a few times before it closed)
UMIST Student Union
Henry's
The Banshee
Jilly's Rockworld

More?
Fantastic nights at Umist, both concerts and disco.

Nice list there. I only really got into music at age 17 and the stuff I listened to for most of the first few years was Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Europe, Boston, Journey etc.

However, I quickly got into Heartland/Americana and this is what I mostly listen to these days. I love Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen (my #1 all-time artist) but my #1 undisputed all-time favourite album is by a guy also in your list: John Mellencamp. The Lonesome Jubilee is such a towering combination of songwriting, performance, lyrics, arrangement and overall, choice of instrumentation, that I can't see it ever shifting from that spot.

I can't even begin to express how much I love Lonesome Jubilee. It is a brilliant album and in my all time top 20 on musical grounds alone but also it was a big part of the soundtrack to my 5 month secondment in Nashville as it was released when I was there and got lots of radio play. I was already a big fan of Mellencamp who was on a run of excellent albums and then topped the lot with Lonesome Jubilee.

With you on the first, not so much the second. I liked his first couple of albums very much. His latter stuff is excellent too. Have listened to just about everything he has ever done and still prefer the more introspective work.
I see he is back to doing his Broadway shows this year.

The album of the Broadway shows is a joy but I prefer the epic feeling E Street Band stuff but Born in the USA is my favourite album of his and another of my all time top 20 albums.

I think Bruce and his band are simply the best live act still playing and I think they might be coming to Europe again next year.

I like all Springsteens albums but for the first four are the best, I’d recommend
John Mellecamps Scarecrow and Big Daddy albums after Lonesome Jubilee,
ive seen him live quite a few times, the last time was at the Apollo.
imho the best singer songwriter now is Jason Isbell

Not tried any Jason Isbell; any recommended albums?

I really hope so as I would/will kill for a ticket.

Everything Mellencamp did between Scarecrow and Human Wheels was fantastic. I also love Mr Happy Go Lucky and Life Death Love and Freedom which is 7 first class albums. Saw him once at the NEC in 1992 - an amazing show.

I’ve listened to a few Jason Isbell albums over the last few years and he is pretty good. My favourite “recent” singer of this ilk is Josh Ritter.

Same here. After my in-depth blog post on Chris Whitley’s “Living With The Law” earlier this year (my second favourite album of all time), I really need to write a similar piece on Jubilee. Now I know there’s a few fans on here, maybe this will give me the impetus for an autumn project!

I have nothing by Bruce but totally respect him as an artist and a man.
I’m with Saddleworth on this though insofar as I prefer his Americana stuff and didn’t really go for that Born in the USA period.
