Classic Rock (Phil Collins lives, run for the hills)

A challenge.

your best classic rock album. 10 tracks. Two sides.

go.
Side A

Spirit of Radio - Rush
Born On The Bayou - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Paper In Fire - John Cougar Mellencamp
Copperhead Road - Steve Earle & The Dukes
Hotel California - The Eagles

Side B

Year Zero - King Swamp
The River - Bruce Springsteen
The Waiting - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Sweet Child O'Mine - Guns 'N' Roses
Under The Sun - Dare

Ok. Sorry to be non specific but @RobMCFC Has got the jist. 10 tracks, 5 each side that demonstrate your musical taste for ‘classic rock’. The album can be themed or a concept and you may propose a title if you want. Those that are brave enough to participate get to score other competitors. Points for taste and imagination, points deducted for poor taste and being too obvious. (Stairway to Heaven inclusion gets -5 from me). Scores have to be justified and I get to be final arbiter of fairness (stifles chuckle).

Do they have to fit on two sides of vinyl or are we allowed single cd time?

Single CD is fine
How abou about a 90 minuute mixed tape :) Going to have to think about this ,will probably go for songs through my life that sent me in diferent directions, may not even be my favourite bands of their kind or even best songs from those bands.Job for tonight though, work to do.

You can get about 80 minutes onto a blank cd so not much difference.

I doubt I will get chance to do this until this evening either. I don't have any cassettes anymore but I may have some lists still of ones that I made because I would just put a little sticker on the cassette case and record the songs on a list not on the cassette liner.

How and where do we score, when posted ? also out of how many.

The Album starts with a recording of Stravinskys fire bird suite that played at the beginning of every Yes concert. (Doesn't count as a track)

1. Heart of the Sunrise - Yes (live version)
(Yes at their best musically. First time I heard it was one of those wtf moments
2. Trilogy- ELP
(Hard choice but chose this as I love the light and shade. Tour de force from Keith from beautiful piano to all out moog and synth carnage. would have loved to include nutrocker for all those air keyboard players but wouldn't have complemented the other songs on this side.
3. Dancing with the Moonlight Knight - Genesis
Suppers Ready would have been a bit obvious, instead this track from Selling England, their most consistent album. It also nicely compliments the Sun, Moon, Stars and Earth vibe on this side of the Album. I bought this album right after successfully queuing for Genesis tickets 1974.
4. Little Earth - Kate Bush
What can I say. Kate's songwriting at its very best and most beautiful. When she sang this at her Hammersmith Apollo gigs I damn near cried with joy (soft arse)
5. Starless - King Crimson
Was either this or the guitar solo from Focus eruption. This is just magical Fripp

1. Here comes The Flood - Peter Gabriel
Going for a more energetic second side but easing in gently with PG's best song ever. Beautifully sung, the version with R Fripp is a joy as well.
2. Heroin - Lou Reid (the version on Rock n Roll animal v2)
Party time. Just a stunning live album from first to last. Made for me by the twin guitars of Wagner and Hunter of Alice Cooper fame. For me, they never played better than on this album and this track stands out.
3. Meeting Across the River - Springsteen
Always a master story teller, I love the way he tells this. Could have chosen a 100 tracks or more but for me this represents what he was about in the earlier days so well
4. Rock and Roll - Led Zeppelin
Difficult choice but the intro is just so iconic and I love Bonzo so much. I saw them at the Kings Theatre in Edinburgh which is not really sized for a Zeppelin concert and I suspect is responsible for my long term hearing damage :-(. They kicked off the concert with this and it felt like I had been punched in the chest
5. Gimme Shelter - The Stones. (Live and extended version) It hurts leaving out Midnight Rambler and Sympathy for the Devil but I chose this for the vocal duel between Jagger and Merry Clayton. I saw them a couple of years ago and they were still just bloody amazing

Bonus Track -Queen Bitch - David Bowie

A mix of styles, genres, from high energy to beautiful ballad. All Classic, and all mean something special to me.

Nice list mate. I will give it a score of 6. You got points added for track 1. (was that the live version on 'On your feet, or on your knees). Anyway its a killer. And for tracks 1,2,3 on side two. Unfortunately Aerosmith, Foreigner and Boston are included high on my list of musical prejudices. If it hadn't been for that I would have scored your list higher still ;-)
