Classic Rock (Phil Collins lives, run for the hills)

I see people keep talking about classic rock as an era, and I guess ‘classic’ does lead to that thinking. For me though classic means more
a type of rock not a specific era and quite a wide ranging type of rock too, so everything from fusion stuff like Santana, early Chicago, through prog, Yes, Genesis, , blues rock, Purple Zeppelin, , metal, Sabbath, Priest, hard rock, Uriah Heep, hair Metal, Poison Motley Crue, Glam, Sweet T Rex, AOR, Journey, Boston, some singer songwriter stuff like early Rod Stewart, Elton John, Springsteen etc.
There are some newer bands playing in all those styles, would still be ‘classic rock’, as well as some of those Legacy bands that despite line up changes are still producing great albums . In some cases their best since the 70/80s.
Here’s just some of what I’ve discovered from searching out during lockdowns.
Older bands with very good recent ( last 10 years) releases.
AC/DC,Alice Cooper, ,Allman Brothers, BOC, Cheap Trick,Deep Purple,Europe, Fates Warning, FM, Judas Priest, Kansas, Little Steven,
Magnum,Night ranger, Opeth, The Outlaws, Saxon, Styx, Thunder,Tygers of Pan Tang, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, ZZTop.

Newer bands ( or new to me) playing ‘classic’ rock making great albums

Arena, BIg Big Train,Black Stone Cherry, Blackberry Smoke, Blues Pills, Cadillac Three, Circus Maximus, Dead Daisies, Cats in Space, Dream Theater, Dukes of the Orient, The Flower Kings, Frost, Ghost, Muse, Nothing but Thieves, Porcupine Tree, Presto Ballet, Riverside, Sons of Apollo, Spocks Beard, Ten, Threshold, Transatlantic, Wobbler.

There really is loads of very good new stuff out there to discover.

That's a good summing up of where my head is at and newer bands do count in my mind as exponents of music that fits the style; they wouldn't if we were looking for an US Classic Rock station playlist but that wasn't the purpose of starting this thread. It's meant to be a broad church and is more about somewhere for like minded individuals to discuss a shared love of music without, hopefully, the dismissive intrusions of NME readers and Elvis Costello fans (look up the David Lee Roth quote). This one is for Sounds readers ;-)

I've got an A-Z (ok no X) of 50 acts that I especially like and count as Classic Rock. I can also produce one of several hundred but wondered if to do that a letter at a time to maybe stimulate debates. Anyway, here's a bunch of my favourites:

My thing with this is, some of these bands, like Uriah Heep have always gone through line up changes, but the original line up isn't coming back, usually because they can't and evn if they could most singers can't perform. Take the new Kansas album different line up but the most 'Kansas album for years and one of their best. LIke Uriah Heep if you want to hear this old stuff performed well probably better than the original line up sounded live in some cases thengo and see them , and listen to their new stuff.
Been wondering if somebody played you a new album by one these bands and said they are old undiscovered music, would people then saythat's great sounds as good as ever ?

Interesting question.

Actually debating, with myself, whether to go and see UH and Kansas next year. Don't have the new Kansas album, in fact not bought anything released by them since early 80's but the new one is on my wish list so good to know you rate it.

Are Kansa playing with Heep on the UK tour next year? If so the. Ill definitely go.
Apparently Kansas doing a lot of Stuff Steve Walsh just couldnt do anymore. Would definitely recommend both their last two albums.

Separate tours.

I can still picture Steve Walsh's gushing thank you to Bill Graham backstage at Day on the Green: almost puke inducing.

Please remove Billy Idol from that list! Lol
I'm offended for him being included amongst all the poodle rock stuff ha ha

Thats an interesting post mate. Whilst I might vary from your list of bone fide legends a bit I can recognise why everyone that you list might meet the classic rock genre.
In terms of the newer bands, I can honestly say I have not heard of or listened to most you mention. Are they really making better music than those that have gone before or are they competent reruns that add very little new? Genuine question is there any band in your new list that is doing something brand new that gives you the same joy as the first time you heard 'suppers ready' or 'heart of the sunrise'. Music that just makes you think 'what the absolute fuck is that'?

wot? No Wishbone Ash, 10cc, Family, Humble Pie, Rory?

What about Elbow? They have a melodic sweeping majesty to some of their stuff.

Probably not, but then I’m not 16 anymore where everything is fresh and new, maybe for young people those bands do,and the newer bands show their influences which are my influences.
There is also a question about emotional attachments to a band or album, even a bands members, when we were young, no internet, you tube itunes, we’d get the bus to get album read the cover on the way home play it over and over, meet friends to talk get tickets go to gigs. We ‘d know the running order lyrics, have stories attached to certain songs and albums they would become part of who we were as people.
Now I’m 58 and enjoying discovering and listening to new music, but no I don’t have that attachment and excitement that I had scouring Sounds and vinyl racks taking a punt on bands based on the cover to discover great new music.

If I posted my long list, only Family would be missing for the first group. I've never listened to Family; maybe I am going to have to.

Elbow never really grabbed my attention.

I am now almost exactly a 50 years of being a music fan, so it's a very different game now but old and new I am still discovering music. Nothing has quite the same impact as for instance putting on the headphones on Xmas day and hearing Rush for the first time by playing an import copy of All The World's A Stage and the following it up with One More From The Road. Or seeing black and white film of women dancing on OGWT as Trampled Underfoot plays and going: I had better listen to this Led Zep mob and then buying Physical Graffiti and hearing Kashmir etc. Hearing Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time.

New bands have no hope of doing that but some of them are making great music. Among the new guys, I'd pick Dream Theater, Drive-by-Truckers and Kid Rock (you may laugh at the latter but he is one talented clever boy).

Forgot Drive by Truckers, some excellent albums, Dream Theater are new to me, but been catching up with them and some great albums. Only heard bits of Kid Rock and like what I’ve heard, but some of his political comments put him in the Nugent Trump camp, which is off putting, but can only judge them on their music really. Although I like Spocks Beard, and Neil Morse in Flying Colours and Transatlantic but get put off listening to his solo stuff because of its very Christian slant. Which is a bit odd as I’m happy to listen to lyrics about wizards and elves ,or aliens and beings from other worlds hello Ronnie James Dio, but not Jesus and god. It always, steered me away from Stryper too who were also otherwise a decent band, still are apparemtly. Hard to explain.

Give Elbow another chance mate. They have a body of good music and Guy Garvie has a fine voice and writes intelligent lyrics.
