Indeed, Chelsea turned their noses up at the first European Cup on advice from the English (FA or FL) Authorities. Hibernian were invited (although not Scottish Champions that year) and accepted ultimately reaching the semi-finals. The invitation wasn't turned down after the inaugural competition.

It was the Football League under the dictatorial Alan Hardaker that banned Chelsea from playing in the first European Cup. The FA actually disagreed with him and supported Matt Busby and the rags when they decided to defy Hardaker and enter the competition a year later.
 
As it draws closer I'm still nowhere near being arsed about it. Maybe I will when it starts. As for the £100m... fucking wow. That's almost enough to buy a player.

I've been into football for nearly 60 years and I see the Premier League as the old First Division but with a new name and broadcasting deal. The Champions League is the European Cup massaged to cater for the greed of the old G14 clubs.
