Cole Palmer

Pep said that last bit to him and cole said no
We'd already signed Doku and were also on the verge of signing Nunes, so from his perspective, he was probably envisaging competing with Doku, Bernardo, and even maybe Foden for time on the right and little chance of ever playing inside. Seen from the end of August and before the injuries hit our squad, I can understand why he wasn't swayed. He's not far off clocking up more minutes this season than he managed in the whole of last season and has also received a call up to the international squad. At this point, he'll probably feel vindicated.

I’m not saying he or any young player should be promised or guaranteed to play every week. But we could have said you will be taking the minutes Mahrez had. I don’t really see what’s wrong with that?

Of course he would have to prove he’s good enough. We did similar with foden, we said to him and his agent we aren’t sending you on loan and you will be getting minutes whether that’s in the cup or the league.

I don’t think it’s that controversial to say to a top young player you will get more minutes if you stay and others leave…

And what if he proved to be nowhere near as good as Mahrez, would you keep giving him the minutes you promised him? How long do you keeping giving him these promised Mahrez minutes until its decided he wasn't good enough? at what point would he agree that your promise to give him minutes was rightly broken because his performances weren't good enough?

Promosing a kid even that much is setting yourself up for friction.

It was done the right way. Either stay and fight for your place like the rest, or leave and fight for a potentially easier place somewhere else.

It was a good decision and there’s no regrets. A penalty vs us doesn’t change anything. Not every player will make it here. Chelsea once had both Salah and KDB and lost both. It’s football and it can happen. Palmer wasn’t forced out, he left on his own accord. We will have a lot of sales in future too where a certain player doesn’t really work out for us but does well elsewhere. Let’s say when Lavia finally starts playing for Chelsea are we going to have another round of meltdown over why’d we sell him and all that? Bit pointless imo. I do understand the frustration because Cole was a local boy but even then he grew up a rag just came through our ranks. Just wasn’t meant to be. Wish him luck and that’s that.

P.s. this is also a massive sign of where we are as a club now. Our influence is insane, clubs wants our talents, Cobham was raved about till 2-3 seasons ago. Now Chelsea’s best player currently is a City academy product and the second best player is ex City. The rivals will continue hatred but it’s normal when we’ve become an incredibly successful club that is well run and are the standard for European clubs around to follow.

After a dozen games, Chelsea have already received more penalties this season (5) than last (3), so at that rate, Palmer might make double figures on penalties alone. Chelsea's youth, their hectic style of football, and pace in the final third suggests to me that they will continue to be awarded them.
