Cole Palmer

Was thinking about this earlier.

For many years after the takeover the club was criticised for not giving its youth players a chance. And there was some justification in this, but the reality was there weren’t any outstanding youngsters being produced for quite some time.

This view still persisted until into Pep’s tenure. But anyone with a pair of eyes could see that was going to profoundly change, with the impact the Academy was going to have.

And now it produces so much talent. Some of it world class. Some of it merely top class. And there’s so much more to come down the line.

When you produce that much talent you are going to let some good ones go from time to time. It’s simply unrealistic to expect all of them to fulfill their talent at City. It’s just not feasible.

Pleased to see him doing so well. He’s certainly exceeded my expectations. Fair play to him.

He uses the space and freedom he gets at Chelsea to showcase his talents. Plus when he went there, it was a free hit for him. Chelsea were in a massive transition, huge player and manager turnover. He had licence to gamble and try things without worrying about any negative reaction. City were/are an established powerhouse where you are expected to win trophies and there is pressure every game. Two different situations - good luck to him for making the most of his opportunities. He'd find it much harder at City though.
We don't put undue pressure on academy lads, so Palmer would've been fine here. Apart from the quality, City also lost the positive PR he brings.

Cole is one of few Pep’s mistakes being in charge at City. There were enough signs of how good he is going to be but he never got the chance he deserved.

If you look for the team sheets you will find Alvarez playing right, left, central while Cole waits for 4:0 situation to get few minutes.

With that pass for P.Neto today I thought he could have been the natural successor for KDB. He has that sharp left foot.

It’s on you Pep. One huge minus in your City career.

PS Don’t sell me that ‚he wanted to leave shit‘. Pep made him to want to leave.

Very good post. Sums it up perfectly, there aren't going to be many blemishes on his copybook when he leaves, but this will be one.

I still think Palmer will one day return.

That's a fair point. But Palmer is the only one in recent memory we will lament letting go; I can't think of a single other academy product where we collectively thought "shit, what a fuck up". Can you?

Phil is a little selfish imo.. sometimes it's a good thing but not always.

I think he prefers a goal over an assist. If you ask Kev he would say the opposite. That's the kind of player Haaland needs next to him.

Sniff, sniff, sniff
