Cole Palmer

I see the winger options mainly as Grealish, Doku and Palmer.

There is many minutes there.

Foden, Bernie pure attacking midfield.

Alvarez striker/attacking midfield.

Kovacic, Paqueta attacking midfield/ defensive midfield.

There is a way to argue for many winger minutes available to Palmer.
You have a lot of attacking midfielders there (plus KDB when fit of course), of which we only usually play 1. Certainly Foden and Bernardo can play in midfield but when everybody is fit, I would expect our 3 in midfield to be Rodri, Kovacic and KDB (possibly Paqueta if signed). In that case the RW options become Bernardo, Foden, Palmer (and Doku if signed). I just don't see him starting over those that often, so his most likely starts would be as cover for injuries and in lesser cup games. Still would be good minutes but maybe not as much as he would want. We shall see.

KdB is basically out of my mind for this season as he is out for 4 months.

Then I said I dont think of Bernie and Foden as wingers anymore.

Thats the rationale you tell Palmer.

Last season he made 7 starts in total across all competitions, playing for 850 minutes in the entire season, with just 2 starts in the PL. If he decides to go, it will be last year that makes that decision easier.

He will have more chances this year as other players have gone!

He clearly wants to be playing week in week out and is prepared to move to get that chance.

What's all this about him forcing a move?

I'm a bit out of the loop atm can someone fill me in please?

Cole was a standout player for me last night and had more of an influence on the game than Phil. He's a young lad that just needs minutes and his confidence back. Hope he gets that here.

Pep said weeks ago that Palmer wanted to leave. Back in Japan, the first time I had heard him. He said it was up to Palmer's agent to come up with a solution and the club would help. He said it again 2 more times, including the at community shield.

After the match yesterday, he said at the start of the summer he thought Palmer would leave, now he's not sure what will happen. It won't be a loan, either a sale or he stays.

Palmer himself then said he is looking to play and looking at options.

Sounds a bit like he was set on leaving, but mahrez being sold and now possibly kev being injured (someone else would fill in, but still leaves more minutes to share) things aren't in a rush.

Either way, the language Pep has used, and mentioning his agent, it is clear Palmer is pushing for a move, and so Pep is slightly annoyed by it.

Palmer is at the best club in world football, under the best coach in world football and is getting game time in the first team. If he moves elsewhere, in search of playing week in week out, it'll be a step down for him. I'd love him to stay and turn into a top player but if he doesn't want to play for us then goodbye and good luck.

This. You heard Walker speaking to him the other night, telling him to be patient and stay grounded, and good things will come. You heard Grealish telling him he himself has been through it as a young player at Villa, and just needs to stay focused and believe in himself. And you heard Pep say he considers him a talent and important part of the squad, with many minutes there to play, IF he is prepared to stay.

Pretty clear Palmer is pushing for a move and the club won't block it, if it is one that works for them. He is not being forced out, used as a makeweight, pushed aside for new shiny toys etc. He is being treated and listened to the same as any senior player.

It’s all a bit confusing. There’s all this then there’s the interview Palmer and Cole did together after the super cup where it really looked like he wanted to stay. Was going on about how much he loved Kyle and how he was like a teacher and sat next to him in the changing room etc etc

It is not really confusing at all. He is saying the obvious that doesn't shit the bed here, while saying the obvious to show he is serious about moving on. And there is probably truth in both. He wants to play more, and would like that to be at City, but will leave if it gets him to play more.

Pep's not going to push him out, but not going to jump through hoops either.

It is all on Palmer. They obviously haven't been able to come up with the offer they expect. A loan makes no sense, and Pep has now effectively ruled it out. A bit of maturity here, and he stays. If not, he leaves and gets replaced with probably a better player, and another young player steps up to fight for minutes.

I hope so, and I think both parties are clear. From our side - if you don't want to stay, then you can go, but it's not on a loan. From Cole's side - I want to play and I've earned it. If I don't feel I'm playing enough, I'm off.

I feel that Cole really wants to stay. I feel Pep wants him to stay, but will not have his hand forced. Talking will be good.
