Cole Palmer

Yeah, but a big part of Poch's reputation is how good he is working with and developing young players. Hopefully he shows that. I know people say we've spent a billion but we've spent a billion on a collection of U21 players. No matter how much money is spent on those players, they are still all inexperienced players who need time, patience and quality coaching to get the team to the level we expect.

And a couple experienced players around them, and a few in their prime too.

Genuine question - if Palmer had been a Chelsea reserve, would you have been happy if we'd bought him for £45m? I'm not saying they are equals, but would you be happy, say, paying £45m for Hudson-Odoi? I genuinely couldn't see Palmer being a starter for us and he never looked World Class to me. He was a reserve player and if it wasn't the fact he lived in Wythenshawe I don't think anyone would be bothered.
Can't really answer whether we would be happy to buy him from Chelsea's academy because the situations are completely different, they aren't buying him to help them win the league this season.

They've taken a little bit of a gamble on the best team in the worlds best youth player on the verge of breaking in turning out to be a top class footballer. £45 million in today's market doesn't seem that much to me, and even if he is a total sancho-esque disaster there and they want to ship him out after a few seasons, his value isn't going to drop massively and they will probably book a profit on sale in the accounts. He makes total sense as a signing from Chelsea's perspective, they either get a top player on the cheap or they cash in when they need it.

As for his ability, I don't think he needed to look world class, just not looking out of his depth makes him very useful and he was more than good enough to fit that criteria. We dont need 21 starters in the squad, 16/17 starters at most and half a dozen squad fillers is ideal for a complete squad, he fits into the latter category comfortably with potential to move into the starter level. His homegrown and club trained status also makes him more valuable to us, we literally cannot buy that.

You said it very nicely. But Pep's reaction during that presser suggests to me it may not have been so smooth.
Peps reaction wasn't smooth you're correct. But that was pretty much the way Cole put his case forward. I don't think it helped that marhez had just gone and we didn't know if Bernie would be staying or leaving.

Yep it's money why he made his mind up and wanted out! We could of said to him you be playing every game this season and see what he would of said because at city 3 years left = 4m Chelsea 7 years contract first two years 100k= 10m then an increase after that so his whole contract be around 50m!

We should held out for 60m of Chelsea if they can afford to pay that to him oh he had a signing on fee too..

Who wouldn't want to go there for that!!

It’s not like he would never made this kind of money at City. He couldn’t be patient and prove his worth and Chelsea gave him what he wanted in terms of money and game time. The quality is lower and he will have opportunity to thrive but only time will tell. I respect the club not offering this wages at his age. Oscar Bobb will get the chance to claim the slot left by Palmer.

This Chelsea project can be double edge sword in terms of young unproven talent on high wages. I can’t imagine what the culture is like at the club. It can go south real quick and pressure is on.

For some reason the precious chav massive have taken offence to that information, and are giving TH pelters.
They would sooner bizarrely believe their club, that has recent unprecedented form for throwing money and contracts around like confetti......would not be paying a 45m signing a relatively modest 100k/week wage.

The naive fools,pmsl.

Make no mistake it was the package chelsea offered him why he insisted he wanted to go! Game time a smoke screen to leave

In terms of money perhaps, we'll see about game time. Mudryk may end up costing them €100m and yet he's only had 66 minutes from 3 PL games so far this season and didn't really fare any better in the 2nd part of last season. They just don't trust him as a starter by the looks, Palmer may end up the same.
