Colonoscopy

Thinking about it the 1st GP I saw at the start of this about 20 years ago did actually diagnose me with ulcerative Colitis but the colonoscopy actually said I didn’t have that and removed it from the record ( although not properly as it keeps getting mentioned )

They did find some polyps which were nothing.

Ended up with the general IBS tag

This time around I’ve had side pain and back pain being investigated, has more colonoscopies. Found more polyps that were nothing dodgy but one showed a marker for some genetic pre disposition to polyps so had more colonoscopies. Then endoscopy, CT scan, MRI ( in the last few days) etc etc.

Still none the wiser as to what’s actually up with me mind you. Although the antacid tablets I’m now on have pretty much stopped the side pain which is something.

Can’t disagree with this. Buy some strong cordial ( not red coloured ) and stack it full of as much flavour as you can.

I used to be awful at drinking it but have gone through a variety of strategies. These days I don’t add juice (think past experiences of it have actually put me off juice full stop).

The thing that I find works best is changing your frame of mind. When you drink anything you expect it to be either sweet, sour or bitter but never salty. The expectation of normal water and getting salinity is what makes it hard to drink.

I just started trying to convince myself that I was drinking a really heavily watered down bovril. Then all of a sudden thinking of it that way, it didn’t seem so bad.

Good luck mate, I've had 2 of them as I'm over 60.
First one I had to have was because they found blood in my turd test and the second one because the found a couple of polups in the first one.
They told me that the blood could have been something as simple as swallowing blood after cleaning my teeth.

The drink is by far and away the worst part of a colonoscopy. Surely they can make it taste better than it does. Salty Lilt should never be a flavour.

If something tastes rancid though, if you close your nose, you limit how much you can taste.

Good luck to the OP. You’ll be fine. It’s definitely a mind over matter thing. The procedure is far worse in your head when you’ve not had it done before.

I did gas and air as I needed to drive and it was a bit uncomfortable as they meander through the bends, but if you’ve had colitis/other bowel discomforts, it won’t be as painful as you think.

You get to do the world’s biggest fart afterwards too.

Strange you have raised this today. I am in the midst or preping for one tomorrow morning, can't say I am looking forward to it.
As @idahoblues says there are many reasons why you have these symptoms. Best to get it checked out thoroughly. Don't shy away from it. Get it done and it will help you to stop worrying.

I have had a few of these over recent years as part of a test sample being done by the North Tees NHS and also a medical issue which saw polyps removed.
Don't worry about it mate - if you are prepping by taking that weird Moviprep laxative rest assured that for me is the worst bit. The stuff is foul tasting and has a weird viscosity. I don't have any meds when its done - just gas and air - and grit my teeth. You'll get through it don't overthink it.

The procedure is no issue. It's that drink thing they give you the day before that's the worst part. And then sitting.on the loo most.of the day too
That brought back some rather unpleasant memories! It's sometime since I last had to have one but I do remember thinking I could take the stuff the day before as prescribed and still go into work. As it happened I was owed a day and so didn't go in, thank God because I'd have shit myself well before I reached the East Lancs Road. In comparison the procedure was far less uncomfortable. Good luck with it, getting it checked out properly is definitely the right thing to do.

Dear god do not leave the house once you start!!

had one two years running after the burned some skin tags off the inside. First time i'm surprised i needed the bowel prep i was shitting myself that much through apprehension, like most things in life you have had sleepless nights over, the reality is it wasn't worth a moments worry in the end.
