Is there really a need for a third kit? I've just watched the highlights of City vs Chelsea in St Louis. Both teams wearing their home colours and NO colour clash. Apart from teams playing in sky blue, or with the same shorts and socks, are there any other opponents whose colours require City to don the away kit? The third kit just seems a means to get extra revenue in, although the grey/black one this past season was pretty damn cool.

In think there might be one this season but often teams whose kits are produced by Nike just use last season's away kit as an alternative. Obviously, we can't use Umbro's kit but next year, I wouldn't expect three new kits.

With City playing in a pretty unusual colour, there has never been a need of a third strip, often not even a 2nd strip. Why in the world would we need an away strip for example when we play Liverpool every season?

Follow the money!

Money!! No other reason. When I was a kid in the 80's one new kit came out a year. A home kit one year and an away the next. That was my birthday/Xmas present sorted each year!
Now it's 3 kits a year. FFP was always going to sting the fans. Nice one platini.

You`ve answered your own question.

There is a reason as by premier league rules you can only wear your away kit 8 times a season and its not only shirts that clash its shorts and socks so say we played Fulham away and we had used our away kit 8 times already our home socks and home shirt would clash with Fulhams so we need a 3rd just in case

This is wrong sorry. There is not limit on how many times you can wear your away kit.

The ruling is around how many times you HAVE to wear it before you can sell it as a replica kit. If you wear a kit 8 times during a season then it becomes a replica kit, otherwise you have to release it as a limited edition. Think back to the third kits that are released on this basis.

The exception is the Euro Away Kit. No such rule applies so as long as we wear it in our away games then we can sell it in th shop.

I agree the 3rd kit is just about money & also, the grey/black stripes was pretty cool.
What an awful kit design to play in though! Such dark kits don't help you pick out your team mates.
Personally, I'd like to see a return of the black & red stripes for the away kit.
