Colourful Drinking Establishments

Add Silver Birch to that. Only place I've seen it kick off mid afternoon on a Wednesday and half the pub scrapping!

As a nipper I used to live down the road on Haveley (my Nans house, nearer to the circle), it was rough as fuck even back then 40 odd years ago, think it went a few years ago didn't it mate ?

Haveley circle was dangerous, no other word to describe it. Police would only go as a last resort and never less than mob-handed[/quote]

Its gone alot quieter now, but i could be saying that as I've lived around there for years... people who dont know benchill or haveley would think its still a dump.

i live by jimmy egans, its alot better than it used to be i must say

The Talisman (but I knew it as 'The Cock o The North' in the good old days) was always a bit lively, the above photo doesn't look too different from many a ' morning after the night before', fun and games guaranteed, always some poor fucker flying through the windows, and if you didn't cop one there, there was always the chippy over the road after closing.

Sorry Dennis, didn't see yours.

Tudor looks a dump from the outside and isn't much better inside. Not too bad though.

The Benchill was notorious but never though it was that bad. The Anvil was ten times rougher.

no pubs left in benchill anymore mate, the bench the anvil the greenwood all shut.

says alot i suppose, if i want a drink these days i just get a few cans in or go to the farmers in northenden

good old days thouagh, cant beat a rough estate boozer

Monroe's near Piccadilly used to be called the Nip and Tipple.
The sign outside was of a barmaid with jutty nips on show.

When was this?

We've established it was called The White Hart immediately before Monroes.

There is a Nip and Tipple in Whalley Range.

Lol tidy you know your pubs mate - misspent youth?

Well my areas of expertise are pretty limited. But pubs in Manchester is probably one of them.

Mis-spent youth, middle age and whatever the bit in between is called unfortunately.

Slightly off topic but I didn't feel it deserved starting a new thread. Does anyone know what was the Gallaghers drinking establishment when they still lived in Burnage? I've heard various places mentioned but just wondered if anybody actually knew?
I had a copy of definitely maybe before they became known. Lad across the road give it me saying he had got it from his mate who had been mates with Liam who had said 'We're in a band, we're going to be famous'
In the following weeks posters appeared all over Manchester advertising the release of shakermaker. Apparently, the conversation took place in the Manor House near Christies ... The pub has gone now. Fuck all there.

Appreciate the response. Thanks mate. I was told the Framers Arms on Burnage Lane was their local before they hit the big time but have often wondered?

Hiya mate, the pubs 'on their doorstep' would have been The Albion, Sun in September and the Green End, The Farmers was further up Burnage lane (not saying it wasn't the Farmers btw, could have been, but those were the closest)

The Magpie in Ancoats, it was not that old really then one day they just demolished it, very dodgy boozer, wonder if the police had a word with the licencing authorities

Great thread.

Another potty estate pub was the Malt in Cheadle. Sadly now closed. The smoking ban was ignored in there and the vault just stunk of weed. You had a choice of ales though, you could have Stella in pints or halfs.

Had my first ever legal pint in there, can't believe it's now closed, is that a recent thing Rascal, sure I saw it open a few months ago (probably longer).

I met a girl on a blind date in there once, she brought her 5 year old kid with her ffs.

anyone remember The Kensington boozer up around the Newton Street area of town, its gone now but me and a few of my pals used to go in now and again when we were 15/16,(1985/6),had a little room upstairs with a pool table and little bar if i remember rightly.Used to be a united pub used by their hooligans and full of Salford and a few notorious bank robbers!,sure it was ran by Jimmy the Weed or one of his pals,it was full of characters
