People I went to school with who were shitbags and would bully when they could get away with it but would also become bullied when someone "harder" was giving them shit.

These are the same shitbags who start trouble when they are on leave and try and act hard or the big man after a few stellas.

These are just certain indivduals ofcourse.

Using something you said about people in a firm being cowards because theres loads of them but it's say in afgan for example the British army have more people in their "firm" and better weapons than the afgan rebels. The British army can wipe out people from miles away with just the push of a button, you don't have to be brave for that.

I am not saying the army is full of cowards but I know for a fact there is a fair few in the ranks.

Josh..You are comparing the british army to a set of football hooligans! There are bullies as you say in all walks of life and not just the Army. We have debated the reason time and time again why we are in Afghanistan. Acclrding to Skashion and fetlock it is because of oil etc etc. All I would say is ask the families of those who died on 09/11...07/07....
War is devisive for sure but sometimes it is justified
.

when does it stop being 'justified'?
When they've killed the same number of people or when they finally say 'well we're quits now'?

all sides think they're right.

Stoner.I agreed with the reasoning why we went into Afghan however I have stated clearly in the past that this war is a war that is unwinnable. Therefore we must create stability as best as we can,try to remove as many factions of the Taliban that we can(training camps) and then leave. This is not an eye for an eye argument for me,this is about trying to give a bit of a better life to the people of Afghanistan

Fact eh? Is this in your experience of serving in the military? Or being at school?

Seeing a Soldier on leave putting a bottle round someones head I'm gna stick with what I said earlier.

Josh.So are you saying all violent crime is committed by military personnel because it appears that this is what you are incurring.??? Go out on any given night of the week and you could quite easily witness this. The Young Guvnors-What do they do??? Exactly what you have just said you have witnessed by military personnel. Violence isn't a military thing. It is a society issue

I agree it is a society issue.

Firstly I was highlighting an example of a coward who has served for the army.

Secondly I don't give a fuck what The Young Guvnors get up to. I don't think they are "cool" or impressive.

I think you have misunderstood most of what I have been saying!!

I don't think anyone that is fighting on the front lines could be described as a coward, no matter what they were like in school. Wghen you gain a few years Josh, you'll realise that your school days were just that, people change enormously throughout their late teens and early twenties.

Some do although maturity takes some people a very long time.
For some lads in WW1 and WW2 maturity was thrust upon them. Watching documentaries, I couldn't believe 18 and 19 year olds were climbing into Lancaster bombers knowing full well that their average life expectancy was 6 weeks.

Indeed.

Thats why so much emotion is bound up with all of our veterans and technology like lancasters etc.

Misunderstood nothing. You have given a single example of one member of the military who bottled someone. To quote you,you stated "there are a fair few in the ranks"...Or is this just a case of over egging it?

Doesn't make him a coward. Makes him a **** sure but not a coward.

But how you can sit there on that vanilla fence of yours and say anyone that fights on the front line is a coward is beyond me.

Yep a ****. The only coward in that story is little Josh for not reporting the soldier to the police. Of course I'm presuming Josh knew the soldier from school.

I think sometimes the sacrifices of our forefathers can be taken for granted. Nobody under the age of 67 was born during the second world war and i do believe we can look back at those times with romantic eyes and spurious notions. My grandad was a desert rat, as a youngster fascinated by history i would ask him questions and he would never answer me, he told me where he served that was all. I will never know why he never spoke all i can surmize is that the horrors he saw were unspeakable for such a gentle humble man.

The world in 1939 was so different to today, the rise of fascism and the militaristic ambitions of Germany and Japan meant the world was under threats i even now struggle to percieve. Imagine today if there was a fascist superpower camped 21 mies across the English channel, if we were the sole western european nation stood against that threat. I think if that was the case many of the glib replies would not be posted. A call to arms wold be met and we would defend our country to the best of our ability.

Thankfully that is no longer the case, Europe apart from the bloody breakup of Yugoslavia has been peaceful, the EU for all its faults has brought peace to our once fractured continent. The threats are now foriegn wars, which we as citizens often struggle to reason why or understand, yet our forces still do the job expected of them in the usual manner.

Im a socialist as you know, i hate war, by definiton im an internationalist and believe in freedom and equal rights for all men and all races. Sometimes though a threat to my rights to believe in what i think is right would mean i would bear arms to protect what i hold dear. I would not however agree to my life being forfeit for the aims of some of todays neo-con imperialism

If thats true, then why do people in the army often refer to people in Iraq and Afghanistan as "ragheads" if your there to make their lives "better"?
