COP26

Just listening to the news now and apparently a few of the popular soaps (Emmerdale, Corrie etc) are going to be running stories relating to the environment.

I've never thought of soaps as a way of politically influencing people before so found that aspect quite intriguing.

I assume it's happened before but maybe not so blatantly?

Why would they not? It’s thankfully becoming normal ‘chit chat’.

They're normalising it to the general population so when they ramp up taxes to pay for all this change then Joe Bloggs doesn't kick up a fuss.

They've been doing this for years with the guilt tripping of normal people when it's industrial level production, transportation etc that should be tackled first.

They've only just managed to electrify the London to Cardiff line in the past year for example. A European equivalent of that line is the Paris to Brussels line which was electrified in 1963!

The politicians in this country are a joke and I only see their actions on climate as either political point scoring to get in the next election or as a way of making more money for their rich friends.

It's topical and in a way it's always been done. Not necessarily with soaps, but popular TV shows. Zed-cars back in the day had a story line about Rabies when we were supposed to be scared shitless about it coming to the UK in the 70's.

Another way of looking at it is it's a way of getting the message across to those that maybe aren't too engaged with the world. Old crusties set in their ways and 'what's all this bloody climate change nonsense about' while sucking on their Werthers Originals.

I wouldn't call environmental issues being brought to peoples attention blatant political influencing myself, but then I'm not a climate change denier. I've no idea if you are or not, but ask any group of teenagers what their chief concern is and you aren't going to hear a debate between them about which political party will best represent their views, because it's just Blah Blah Blah to them. Nothing is being done to protect their futures, they are worried, and they are rightly getting annoyed about the lack of action on their behalf.

You may be intrigued by it, they are angry, and they want attitudes to change.

COP26: Minister in wheelchair unable to attend summit​


An Israeli minister has said she could not attend the COP26 summit on Monday because it was not wheelchair accessible.
Karine Elharrar tweeted that it was "sad" the UN "does not provide accessibility to its events".
An official in Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett's delegation said they had formally complained to organisers.
Mr Bennett said he would not attend on Tuesday if Ms Elharrar could not access the summit, the official added.
UK ambassador to Israel Neil Wigan tweeted that he had apologised "deeply and sincerely" to the minister.
"We want a COP Summit that is welcoming and inclusive to everyone," he wrote.

Someone told me yesterday that the Timothy Dalton Bond films toned down the womanizing because they were made in the middle of the AIDS epidemic.
 
I wish I was rich enough to be able to worry about global warming , but unfortunately I can't afford the private jet.

On the other hand, if it's done per capita it can be seen which countries have the most to do if we assume that emissions per head is the fairer measure. If that's the case there's a few countries that are a lot worse than you might think like Australia, most of the gulf states and some central Asian countries, as well as the more obvious ones in North America.

Need to be a little careful with using that as a baseline as the global carbon project figures exclude traded goods. The figures are just the CO2 at the point of production and not consumption.
 
Given the urgency, why will it take them 10 years to stop deforestation? Can’t they look at why it takes that long and agree to do more to make sure they can end it much sooner?
