Corners (again)

A couple of surveys have shown that the success rate at corners is only 3-5%. Perhaps we expect too much?

If it's 5% and we get 10 per game, that would mean we score from corner (directly, not from the ensuing play) EVERY TWO GAMES.

At 3% and 5 corners per game we should be getting one every 6 games.

In other words, we should be scoring something between 8 and 20 goals per season from a corner, according to your stats.

In reality, if we get 2 or 3 a season, we are doing well. We went a season and a half without a solitary goal scored from a corner.

Yes, its 3% direct, 5% including ensuing play. I think another poster calculated last season that we should have scored about 10 in the PL.

Why do we almost always take outswinging corners ? This is doing the defenders job for them i.e. keeping the ball away from the goal.
There are several reasons why we should use the inswinger almost always - especially with our less tall forwards.
So we should be looking at Silva from the right & KDB from the left, it aint rocket science.
I agree, out swingers are basically just floaters in to the box. With a guy like kdb I can't believe we don't utilise the in swinger from corners.

Cibaman is totally along the right lines and your perception is miles away from the reality.

Premier League Corner Stats
15/16 - 133 goals from 4117 corners - Goal per corner conversion rate - 3.23%
14/15 - 120 goals from 4062 corners - Goal per corner conversion rate - 2.95%
13/14 - 118 goals from 4093 corners - Goal per corner conversion rate - 2.88%

The OPTA definition of a "goal from a corner" was IIRC was one within 3 or 4 touches of the kick being taken so the one we got at the weekend definitely counts as a goal from a corner. The percentages above do not differentiate between 1st touch i.e. directly headed in or 3 or 4 touches. So, goals from corners are relatively rare events and supporters from ALL teams see repeated failure.

So, which team has the best record for scoring goals from corners? Well, cumulatively City scored the most in the 3 seasons 13/14 - 15/16 with 30 goals from 813 corners.

City - 30 Goals
West Brom - 28 Goals
Liverpool - 24 Goals
Chelsea - 23 Goals and no one else 20 or more.

Now, City won more corners over the last 3 seasons than anyone else so there is an expectation we should score more. Very importantly tho our conversion rate is only 2nd to West Brom who by some distance have been the most efficent. Their goal conversion rate over the 3 seasons was 5.13% and ours is 3.69%. Rather than us being shit we have actually been very good relative to everyone else. We are scoring a goal on average every 27 corners. Over the 3 years the 2 worst teams are Stoke and United who scored every 63 and 50 corners respectively.

There's an interesting read here about how Simeone and Atletico managed to get a corner conversion % of better than 10% (5.2 corners per game, better than 1 goal from corners every 2 games)

It goes in cycles as teams watch you and suss you out.

There was the White and Hinchcliffe purple patch, when Pearce took over, two in two for Kompany last season, two low near post corners scored in the last two games.

Arsenal under Graham in Europe were very handy due to the players they had and the opposition being less prepared.

Thanks for taking the time to post this - very interesting.

As to the 30 we have allegedly scored? Well I don't know what games I've been watching, but genuinely I would have said it was less than 10. I think the "in 3 or 4 touches" bit is relevant. I wonder whether "5 or 6" is being included, or "9 or 10". I do find 30 goals in 3 seasons very hard to believe, but there you go.

Even resorted to Sterling taking corners at Burnley and he was just as woeful as the rest. It shouldn't really be difficult for a professional to hit a stationary ball a set distance consistently with some practice?
