Coronavirus (2021) thread

As I said at the time I decided the trade off was between a better chance of avoiding hospital and death versus a better chance of avoiding catching Covid at all. That seems the main way the two vaccines differ. Avoiding catching it is always going to look more attractive to anyone looking at it without much understanding of the difference. As that is why most people have the Flu jab. To stop you getting the flu. Though in truth its efficacy in doing that is much like the AZ jab. And what matters more is how bad you are IF you catch it. And if it stops too many people needing hospitalisation thus killing others by default who cannot be treated.

Globally that is the big deal here and if AZ is effectively downrated it will massively slow the rest of the eradication around the world given the cost differential between the two.

They started trials today in Liverpool - it was on Granada Reports - giving a second dose of the other vaccine not the one they had first time around - to see if this combination works.

Results not due until June so not likely to eliminate the use of the same vaccine in both jabs this time round but may well be to ensure the October booster they are likely to give could indeed be a different kind as by then we are likely to have 4 or 5 vaccines not just 2.

There is wider picture here that needs to not do down the AZ vaccine needlessly in public perception as there simply is not going to be any opening up in the near future if too many refuse the vaccine we will have in the greatest numbers over coming weeks.

That's why I am concerned about the impact of these comments. I did seriously think about saying no myself when I first heard the stories about AZ. But all these factors have to be balanced together not just selfish desire for the best.

If you are lost in the Sahara and would rather have champagne when you find a pool of water you do not walk on by and hope for better. You take your best chance to survive there and then.
Let’s be honest. It doesn’t seem to be too much of an issue so far. Government expressed that take up has exceeded expectations so far apart from certain communities which aren’t taking any vaccine regardless of which one it is.

I do wonder how much the number of doses being handed out will slow down when those who have already had their first start being given their second which should be around now.
On the basis of doing around 400k a day surely we need to be doing 800k a day to continue the progress at the same rate.

I’m engaged too mate but there’s more important things right now.

It can wait.
Very simplistic way of looking at things.
Of course “there are more important things than” travel, weddings, being able to get a pint etc...
But there is a great deal of devastation caused by those industries being paused. It’s more than allowing people to go and sunbath, ruin their life or have a pint. It’s the millions employed in those industries and the families supported by those individuals.
A good example I saw the other day of an overlooked unintended consequence was those people, particularly women of a certain age who have been unable to court and still look unlikely to be able to do so. They risk losing out on their opportunity to meet someone, settle down, start a family. Sacrificing their potential future family for others.

It will be another month or so before the big numbers of second shots are needed. The roll out has sharply increased in a short time so there are 11-12 weeks before second shots need to be administered.

Hopefully by then supply will have increased as I don't think getting more vaccinations done each day is a huge issue.

Edit: in fact the head of the NHS Sir Simon Stevens has said today that the rate of vaccinations will double to do both second shots and the current rate of first shots.

I suggest you read my previous posts on why asking those questions are tedious.

It’s not to say those industries don’t matter, it’s that they’re not going to get an answer now so why waste the time.

Regarding the wedding point, it was specifically to the poster that said he wanted to get married, I was giving the opinion from a perspective of how important getting married now is compared to people’s safety.

Only another 2-3 weeks until the first second doses on mass

There is no reason why the government should not set out when they reopen.
If the data says x, y will open etc...
Everyone knows where they stand.
A proper “roadmap”.
There is no reason why not other than to allow the government and sage to obfuscate and move the goalposts yet again.
It would not be a waste of time and would allow those industries to plan.
How much has hospitality lost having to gamble on ordering food, drink etc... up to the last minute due to late announcements they knew they would make.
