If they clearly disagreed it was their public duty not to put standing on a podium ahead of saying this is wrong.

It's not their job to agree or disagree. Merely to inform as to the consequences of the policy proposals.

Vallance yesterday:

the models released today show infections will rise after 19 July.

If behaviour returns immediatly to pre-pandemic levels, there would be a “very, very big rise”, he says.

He's informing us of the consequence. That's his job.

Equally, Whitty:

there would be an “exit wave” whatever the date for opening up.

is informing us that there are also consequences if we delay. He's not giving an opinion if it's right or wrong.

Johnson has used the presence of advisors as cover for highly unwise policy decisions previously, as the public, understandably, see their presence as support. It isn't necessarily so.

Quotes from the Graun liveblog.

Macron and Mitsotakis are certainly spelling out what is to be expected in France and Greece, respectively. Vaccination to be mandatory for health workers and proof of vaccination to be required for entry into recreational facilities, including, in France, travel by train. More stick than carrot for their particular populations, but it’ll be interesting to see what effects these measures have. I appreciate that each country is unique, but we shouldn’t be beyond learning from other approaches.

Wales data

1 death - was 1 last week

737 cases - was 698 last week

6.1% positivity - was 6.4% last week

These numbers are starting to look like the plateau in Scotland, the North West and that Zoe has been seeing

You know the trains that have air conditioning. Do they recycle the air or do they exchange it externally. This is potentially very important but I have never seen it discussed.
The link below explains the system on board trains, well SNCF trains, but I would imagine it’s similar on most modern stock in the U.K.. That said, when electrical systems break down on trains, as they invariably do, there is little comfort for passengers.

Andy Burnham - unsurprisingly - just slammed the government over their plans.

He says there are going to be lots of frightened vulnerable people expected to go out and face seeing people without masks because they have been told it is not mandatory.

Some are calling it fear day not freedom day apparently.

I get that psychological hurdle. Have faced it myself. It will be a case of slowly slowly.

But at least they have the choice to isolate still if they wish, Those who need to work and bring up families have to balance living life versus restrictions in ways that are harder to achieve with the kind of limits that the most vulnerable might prefer.

There is no perfect solution. It has to be a compromise and one that balances lives and livelihoods.

We got a visit this morning from local authority. To check we were ok…and also self isolating. You’ve been warned ;)
Considering we’ve got two with covid and two of us isolating who haven’t caught it, we haven’t had a visit. Just my son getting woken up by a call every other day.

As an aside, covid ended up being nothing more than a mild cold for both my children, 20 and 17, my daughter slightly worse in that she is still lacking energy and needs a nap from time to time in the day, but other than that both right as rain. Me and missus never caught it, both double AZ, back out and about officially from today.

I'll have my mask with me at all times if asked to put it on i wont hesitate to do so.
Second nature for me to have a mask in the pocket of every item of clothing I own and wear so same for me too, it’s no biggie.

Where I won’t wear one is for the stupid things like going to the loo in my local boozer, or walking to my table in a restaurant.

Government advice just posted to the most vulnerable,

Do not mix with those unvaccinated. Do not go out to work if you do not have to. Do things outside not inside.

This seems to fit the idea that this is really putting the responsibility for choice onto people themselves not an edict from government.

We do need to take steps in that direction as you cannot impose order in a democracy forever,

Though I do wonder how someone vulnerable is meant to know if they are mixing with the unvaccinated.

Heard him utter the same on Radio 4 this morning, a term he’d obviously coined himself. Both terms, freedom day/day of fear, are ludicrous soundbites and politicians should be avoiding them. In the Netherlands, the health minister has been chastised for encouraging youngsters to take the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine (manufactured by Jansen) and to go ’dancing with Jansen’. That led people to get vaccinated, not bother waiting two weeks for its protection to take effect and instead go to nightclubs immediately. Needless to say, a small number of these youngsters were already infected and went on to infect many, many more.

They should be made to ring a bell………..

I will continue to wear masks in shops and on public transport. I guess those who will suddenly stop on Monday haven’t been complying anyway. What I will not do, as I was expected to do 2 weeks ago, is sit through a 3 hour theatre show with a mask on. All 25 of us, in a 250 capacity theatre.
Pretty much where I'm at. Mask wearing in shops and on the bus and train for the foreseeable but I won't be wearing one when back watching City in August
