All the stats look bad. Rising cases, hospital admissions and deaths and we are in August.

We really need to re-vaccinate but first step is to identify the vaccine we're going to use. This has to happen quickly. I think the R rate is only just above 1 but the situation seems to me to be slowly deteriorating in the UK and imo it will only accelerate.

The only thing that is going to prevent another wave is vaccination ( and that will be very effective imo, although to avoid regular vaccination it would be ideal to get more specific vaccines).

IMO the government needs to have a public awareness campaign now and say to people look in September or October we are going to vaccinate again. We're very confident that that will have a decisive effect and see us through the Winter, but between now and then we need you to wear masks in public indoor spaces.

We just need to get these infections on a downward trajectory. I don't think it needs much but remember in a few days, schools re-open, universities re-open that will cause problems.

Don't wish to be alarmist. All I want is for the football to carry on and normality to carry on as much as possible. A gentle public reminder of what needs to be done in order that we can carry on. If we don't I fear another wave of more serious restrictions.

The problem, consistent with the entire UK response throughout, is that we have no strategy.

Govt policy at the moment is "pretend it's all over and hope for the best". Witness govt mps paying zero regard to their own mask guidance. They're just not serious people, and seem incapable of leadership alas.

ATM R~1 but there are sound reasons to expect it to rise as schools and unis reopen. I see no sign of serious thinking as to how we deal with it if it does. Of course, we might get lucky. Ironically, the one thing going for us is that our piss poor track record to date means there's a lot of naturally acquired immunity around...

Interesting snippet of data (she works for PHE).

As well as exhort people to get vaxxed of course we should *allow* adolescents to get vaxxed. Current policy is effectively for every school child to catch COVID.

It's quicker than vaccination and from those numbers more effective.
Both I and my daughter have come to the conclusion that this is SAGE (advice driven) policy not just Government policy. The numbers game from getting a wave now rather than from the late autumn and winter is far too compelling. Up to 10 times the number of serious cases, hospitalizations and deaths - due to higher viral loads on catching it - much like the difference between catching Flu in the winter and Flu in the summer. Also less liklihood of complications like Pneumonia.

In the same way that running out into the road is quicker than using the crossing.

SAGE doesn't set policy. This guy is on sage. If it were the policy, the government should be open about it.

It’s the 10% of anti vaxxers who have helped to keep the Delta in circulation. I can’t see a solution there as they are now all Right Said Fred fans. Having the 16 and 17 year olds vaccinated will help a bit
There is a simple solution to this, no vaccine then no free nhs treatment for covid if you catch it. Put exemptions in for people who medically cant have the vaccine. But the rest have to get health insurance to cover their hospital covid healthcare if they need it.

Lets see how many anti vax idiots then dont take up the vaccine. Not many I suspect.

Obviously this government or any UK government wont put through legislation like that as it might offend and upset the minority, despite being to the obvious benefit of the vast majority.

The NHS is there for everyone, even the fuckwits.

Independent SAGE is not independent it is a left wing think tank like all organisations that claim to be "Independent" so I'll take that with a pinch of salt.
Of course SAGE advices. But their advice is is to let Delta run it's course now to save many more lives and have less serious illness later on in the year.
Or did you miss Whitty and Valance talk about why it was better to open up now than later?

I assume that is fairly old data as I think we now have around 25% of 12-17-year olds with at least one jab.

Independent doesn't mean you have a special focus or agenda or can be positioned in a certain politicial environment. Independent means that you're funded by memberships and donations.
