ENGLAND HOSPITAL DEATHS - BIT OF A JUMP UP SADLY

108 with 27 North West - last week 64 with just 5 North West and week before 62 with 14 North West

This has been the largest week to week jump in some time,

Hopefully a one off but not good news obviously.

All 108 were since Friday too. No catch up.

We also have our first over 70 death day after 5 days - AUG 20 is on 71.

Moreover the two days immediately behind are high enough they are likely to top this in next 48 hours.

The size of the NW contribution is a bit worrying too,

5021 new cases (another record high)
2538 last week

11% positive
Last week 7.5%

396 in hospital, +32 from yesterday
44 in ICU, +3 from yesterday

Possibly, yes, but good news in the sense that, unlike flu, it will be the same vaccine rather than a new one (or at least only changed infrequently), and a single vaccine, rather than a cocktail of several as the flu one is.

Also good news because the vaccine against COVID is considerably more effective than the flu one.

And beware of too much pessimism on the waning piece. It may not be as bad as reported, and certainly isn't waning too much against severe disease.

I linked a simply excellent thread on this previously, and shall unashamedly threadbomb as it's worth reading.

There'll be a reluctance to take-up further jabs as people will consider they've dine their bit and also people won't want to risk becoming vaccine dependent.

Maybe. It was said that the French were the most vaccine hesitant nation in the world and they've overtaken us. Equally the Australians have screwed themselves by avoiding vaccination. A decent proportion of the USA appears clinically insane!

The psychology is impossible to predict, at least by me.

What do you mean by "risk becoming vaccine dependent"?

This is not too good either. Another new record.

Doubling week to week. Can see why Rubaix is a bit concerned.

Dutch Doctors complaining about Covid-deniers and their family members who refuse to believe that they have it (doesn’t exist!), no matter how serious the condition. Refuse even to allow Doctors to perform standard Covid tests, so diagnosis has to be reached by other means, which adds to the frustration of the attending physician and drains other hospital resources. Bring back Sir Lancelot Spratt.

ENGLAND HOSPITAL 108 DEATHS MORE DETAIL

By Region:- East 11, London 21, Midlands 13, NE & Yorkshire 19, North West 27, South East 9, South West 8

North West deaths by trust:- 8 Liverpool, 4 Blackpool, 3 each in Manchester, Pennine Acute & Warrington, 2 in St Helens and 1 each in Bolton, East Lancashire, Tameside & Wigan

By age: 20 - 39 (2), 40 - 59 (13), 60 - 79 (42) & 80 PLUS (51)

So total deaths with out of hospital England to add are :- 122.

Last week the total was 89. This became 111 on all settings later.

And total cases for the three nations with England to add today are:- 8497.

Pretty sure this is the highest 3 nation number yet.

Last week the total at this stage was 5256 - so a more than 50% wk to wk rise.

England later added 28, 648 to the UK total of 33, 904

Yesterday England added 23, 474 to the three nations total of 7364

to give a UK total of 30, 838

Expect a rise today in England as this usually occurs mid week. Just a case of how much.

If UK total is under 34,000 England will be doing pretty well comparatively. Sadly more likely to be nearer 38,000. Hope I am wrong.

a worry with schools uni and college yet to go back ?

Could be worse news

149 all settings deaths

35, 847 cases. Up 1943 on last week. From 33, 904.

But entirely via the three nations bar England.

As 27, 350 from England

DOWN from 28, 648 last Wednesday

Curious that the other nations are rising and England not and even falling wk to wk. Though up nearly 4000 on yesterday as is usually true mid & late week.

14K more pillar 1 & 2 tests than yesterday AND 20K more than last Wednesday.

Back to school in Scotland might explain the rise in numbers there?

Greater Manchester not really sharing in the joy. Though could be worse.

Five boroughs up week to week (Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport and Tameside)

The most is up 30 by Tameside.

Bury is same as last week and lowest in GM on 75.

Only Trafford - who had a good day on 93 - down 17 wk to wk - also under 100.

Tameside at 154 was second highest behind Manchester on 248 - up on day but down 17 wk to wk.

Greater Manchester V North West actually did OK.

The overall trend is VERY flat. GM today is DOWN by 7 to 1277.

Indeed 4 of the last 6 GM numbers have been 1236 - 1231 - 1284 and 1277 today.

The North West today was on 3337 - that is up just 62 on yesterday.

EASILY the lowest rise of all the regions today.

Indeed South West has just 80 FEWER cases today despite the vast population difference between the two regions,

And London - up 762 to 3546 & South East - up 531 to 3993 - have higher cases today than North West.

Yorkshire is up 395 too on 3131.

All the regions are pretty much of a muchness now - even both of the Midlands regions are individually just a few hundred behind the North West and collectively well above.

That all benefits NW the most as they were very high on their own not that long ago.

40 days ago the North West was away with the fairies peaking on 7424.

Here is the past week of NW numbers:-

3275 - 3577 - 3307 - 3109 - 2982 - 3039 - 3275 - 3337

You cannot get much flatter than that over the past week.

So week to week NW up 62 (exactly the same as the day to day by chance)

The bad news is that despite falling day to day Greater Manchester is UP 71 week to week - which is more than the entire 62 rise by the NW.

But those numbers are so small damage to trends is minimal.

GM just not quite doing as well as it should in the NW though both essentially FLAT.
