India reported a record 200,000 new cases, as many hospitals treating coronavirus patients reported severe shortages of beds and oxygen supplies.

The surge was the seventh record daily increase in the last eight days and comes as the country battles a massive second wave of infections that has its epicentre in the state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai - which has entered lockdown.

India reported 200,739 new cases over the last 24 hours, according to official data released today.

That's the problem with religious countries.

They probably think their God will protect them.

I would like to know how serious this SA variant outbreak was in the vaccinated London care home. Clearly the authorities know this. Think about what it means if some needed hospitalisation, and also think what it means if they were protected from the worst effects of the illness. Could be bad, could be good. I think we need to know this even if they don't release person specific details.

Was at work last night at Hartlepool. Down at the Marina there was a farmers market. 20myards away was the Covid testing sight and a further 20 yards down the road a huge funfair.

Also thousands at the market & fun fair so am predicting a 4th lockdown shortly, at least in Teeside

There’s talk of legislation to enforce vaccinations for social care staff but I can’t see that happening (or at least beyond the minority of local authority employed staff). I think there is an obligation on anyone in health and social care to be vaccinated, unless there is a truly exceptional clinical reason for not doing so.

I know Feigl Ding seems to have a tendency towards sensationalising many things, but I suppose it would be naive to disregard his every word. This one on the Brazillian p1 variant which I believe is also on these shores, it'd be interesting to know more up to date details. Seems to be 'outrunning' even the UK strain in parts of Canada.
