I know Feigl Ding seems to have a tendency towards sensationalising many things, but I suppose it would be naive to disregard his every word. This one on the Brazillian p1 variant which I believe is also on these shores, it'd be interesting to know more up to date details. Seems to be 'outrunning' even the UK strain in parts of Canada.

Agreed he can be alarmist but if that data is real and the P1 variant is out performing the kent variant enough to become the dominant strain then it must be far higher R0 than the Kent variant. thats pretty major if it pans out.

once it's in the country, localised lockdowns will do next to fuck all, in my opinion. it's all or nothing.
I thought that lesson had finally been learned after what happened on Merseyside pre Christmas when they were 'let off' full restrictions all around them as a doggy treat and ended up going sky high by osmosis.

Exactly what caused Wigan to go stratospheric in late Summer by bleed from the parts of GM that were shut down when it was let off. Hancock did confess that is why he made the restrictions on GM without exemptions pre Christmas as he had belatedly figured out what was clear since August.

If we go back to this system it is going to be much worse with these new variants by the looks of it. We have to be ruthless wherever they turn up and if movement is now free around the UK and holidays are now happening by the time we work out one of them has spread it will be too late.

I kept wondering why scientists have been saying a third wave following end of lockdown could occur just as things are going so well and last Summer was almost normal and now we will be reaching peak vaccination (of first doses at least).

But if our response to these dangerous new variants is too local amidst people travelling more freely around the UK then they will escape and spread given how rapidly they seem to do so.

I am hoping they know all these things and are not stupid. But lockdown fatigue will make any such measure over coming weeks harder than ever to reimpose successfully.

How we balance what we want to do and what we realistically can afford to risk doing is a bit like crossing Niagara Falls on a tightrope.

You need to know what you are doing, execute it perfectly and get lucky that no sudden gust of wind hits.

The difference between becoming a hero or a disaster is a stiff breeze out of nowhere.

And yet the hindu festival with millions in attendance went ahead..crazy
Religions have been blinkered during this pandemic. Even here during the recent lockdown, places of worship were still open. Fucking stupid!

Do they think god(s) will stop them getting the virus?

Yeah agree. Especially given that the reports from Brazil is that the p1 is affecting a much younger sector of the population, which by in large remain unvaccinated on these shores. Also still the question of efficacy against this variant for those who've had the vaccine, particularly only one dose thus far.

Also agree with Healdplace and Shemnel. Localised lockdowns to prevent spread of a variant which was over here in February or March, when people have been freely travelling throughout the country seems another stupid idea.

We've been warned against importing variants for goodness knows how long so it's sad that we've even allowed ourselves to find us in a position where we are now at a bigger risk than we ought to be.

India reported a record 200,000 new cases, as many hospitals treating coronavirus patients reported severe shortages of beds and oxygen supplies.

The surge was the seventh record daily increase in the last eight days and comes as the country battles a massive second wave of infections that has its epicentre in the state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai - which has entered lockdown.

India reported 200,739 new cases over the last 24 hours, according to official data released today.
Why isn't the news media reporting on what is causing case increases?
I.e. What varriants are causing the increase?
They really are pathetic.

For the record it's mostly B117 (Kent 40%) and then B1351 (SA 17%) then some P1 (Brazil <10% not mentioned in article).

But they appear to have there own variant that is a double mutant of E4847 and L452R

I would like to know how serious this SA variant outbreak was in the vaccinated London care home. Clearly the authorities know this. Think about what it means if some needed hospitalisation, and also think what it means if they were protected from the worst effects of the illness. Could be bad, could be good. I think we need to know this even if they don't release person specific details.
The news media are not interested in finding the real story.
