Boris just confirmed first UK death with Omicron.

It may well be milder but it will still kill some people this Winter sadly. It was never going to be otherwise.

I said 'with' note. The media are saying 'from'. There is a difference but it is usually not a factor in reporting. No detail at all as yet of the situation in this case.

What's a phd in mathematics got to do with Virology or epidemiology? You are not remotely qualified to argue with the vast consenssus of the experts.

btw are you that data analysist who said there would be no 2nd wave under a new username?

No, I'm the mathematician that built a model that said estimated 30-50k cases per day in the third wave (you can go over my history) and was arguing with people like you that the Sage model of 200k+ was completely wrong and over estimated. Guess who was right

With or because of, though? Did they get admitted due to covid, or was it incidental?

Is it even possible to know? It's one thing that's confused me for this whole pandemic.

Edit: noted your edit.

‘System canna take it Captain’

Dept of Health sources clarify that the promise on boosters is to “offer” them by end of December not “deliver” them. Confusion stemmed from PM saying last night that eligible adults in England “will have the chance to get their booster before the New Year” @BBC

Was he questioned on whether it was with or because of? I know it may sound a semantic difference, but I twice heard experts and politicians evade answering that question yesterday, and I don’t think it’s a wise policy.

Here is what he said at a vaccination centre just now on this:-

QUOTE I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus, I think that’s something we need to set on one side and just recognise the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population.

His exact words were 'at least one person has died WITH Omicron'. As I noted no other details. But he did use the word with. The media reports so far have not. Why I mentioned it as it matters.

I have known that for a year as my only relative to die 'with' Covid after being sent home recovered likely died via other things but we will never know. It happens a lot. I wrote about that in here last December. Not much has changed since.

How weird is that thread? Posters we never hear off can’t wait to offer their critique (mostly negative) whilst a match is taking place. I only do home games now but when we are on TV or the dodgy box I’m watching the football not arguing with some other weird fuckers.
It’s a thread with no objectivity. Blind support with no balance.

Typical BBC... talk about scaremongering...

BREAKING NEWS: PM CONFIRMS ONE PERSON IN THE UK HAS DIED FROM OMICRON.

Then go on to say "We have no further information at the moment".

Surely they mean he died WITH Omicron - cause of death unknown.

The way they word these things is so bloody important and they really should be taken to task for scaremongering.

Indeed, but given that there are still (to the best of my knowledge) no reported cases of people dying from Omicron alone, I think it's important for journalists to question politicians and experts alike. I appreciate that they want uptake of the boosters, but they should also be clearer in their communication.

Who knows? You don’t know whether it is scaremongering or not.

If the article makes one extra person get their booster, it’s doing its job.

Maybe but the BBC's ticker tape banner said most definitely he had confirmed one person has dies FROM Omicron. And its that message that sticks.

It is inevtable Omicron will actually cause or trigger deaths regardless of if it is milder once it reaches vulnerable people. I do agree that being accurate with how you word it matters. Why I emphasised the point. As Boris did make it clear the word was 'with' but that nuance will be forgotten by those wanting to sell stories.

Though the BBC just now said in their noon headlines 'one person has died with the Omicron variant' so maybe someone had a word.

Honestly can't believe it warrants breaking news across the media, yet the fact that Javid's mention of actually only 10 hospitalized does not.

This has been the way for the entirety of COVID, there is nothing new here. We still don't know exactly how many people have died from COVID or with COVID since March 2020. This is also why comparing deaths like for like by country is also completely impossible because other countries define COVID deaths differently.

However, the reason for the difficulty is simple. If someone has a heart attack, comes into hospital and tests positive for COVID/Omicron and then dies weeks later, it's impossible to determine if the cause of death was complications of COVID or the initial heart problem.

Either way, death certificates will list COVID because it's extremely likely that COVID complicates treatment regardless for people presenting with serious conditions. This is perhaps why the majority of COVID deaths have always been in people who have multiple conditions.

So Omicron may not have caused a death, but it's almost certain that it will have potentially severely complicated the condition for whatever that person was in hospital for so it rightly should go down as a COVID death.

That was quick given this morning the Health Secretary told the nation there was 10 in hospital with Omicron, none in ICU, none on ventilation and zero deaths.
