After today's announcements it feels like someone keeps adding more and more bricks to the tunnel the closer we get to the end. I suppose that there will be and end to this at sometime but can't see that happening till early next year at the earliest. Maybe I will be proved wrong and the immunity effect will kick in earlier than that leaving the virus with less opportunities to move around.

Deaths don’t overwhelm the NHS though.

By disregarding hospitalisations, aren’t you selecting figures to suit your opinion?

Not having enough capacity overwhelms the NHS, which is a decision taken by successive governments and is nothing to do with Covid.

At least the government have been planning on how not to overwhelm the NHS over the 16 months of the pandemic…………

The rate of hospitalisation doesn't worry the NHS that much (unless extreme) it is high bed occupancy coupled with high rates of hospitalisation that worry them.
Discharges come into the equation and most vaccinated patients are discharged fairly quickly this time round.

This time round, for every 1.43 admissions for 1 discharge, so its going to take a heck of a lot of admissions to put the NHS in trouble.
563 admissions on Monday were probably accompanied by around 400 discharges.
At that rate It,
It will take daily care rates of 100s of 1000s to get us in trouble.

Indeed, so hospitalisations are the most important stat when coupled with discharges.

Deaths less so, unless you are classing them as a discharge.

Sad to hear.

Same thing happened with us this morning. We received an email from the school, five minutes before my daughter was due to start her walk to school, stating that a child in class tested positive at the weekend. Due to the short notice, she had no lessons today. Buggered up my day. I was due to go into work as I had a meeting with a director (the exec board now demand in-person meetings). Not a great look for me.

I thought school bubbles were ending on 19 July? If that's the case, then I would have thought our kids would return on that day? Not sure though.

I thought same re the 19th, but think it still depends on who your school goes with - Public Health England or the local authority?

We go away to Scotland a week on Friday, so we are just glad it wasn't next week this happened.

To be honest, I don't want her going back in then for a couple days just in case...

Macron announced the start of the fourth wave on French TV last night making the non vaccinated 2nd class citizens.
Basically you can only use public transport or, or go to a bar or restaurant or other place of entertainment from now on if you are vaccinated. You also can't work in the health or care sectors from 15th September if you're not vaccinated.
I wonder how that will play out with the French population who are much more reluctant to be vaccinated than their UK neighbours (70% v 90% take-up in surveys).

Also the last point seems to be driving the slope he's describing. Talk about selecting figures to suit your opinion...

1. Most concern is about hospitalisation. But by all means, do the same comparison for deaths.

2. You've misunderstood the plot. He's only sketched the last point, but there's a whole bunch of other points leading up to it.

i think the vote or further discussion in the commons on whether care home staff are to be mandatorily vaccinated is today

i for one am against this, i dont believe in mandatory vaccination and dont believe in the stratification of society by mandatory vaccination by career choice, i think it's a blunt instrument that will damage a fragile employment sector, but i know plenty support it.

however, the gov consultation of 13,000 people show 57% of people oppose it also.
