Users of the Zoe app will be familiar with the new, updated top 5 symptoms for Covid among the vaccinated.
Symptoms
Here is the current ranking of COVID symptoms after 2 vaccinations:
Headache
Runny nose
Sneezing
Sore throat
Loss of smell
The previous ‘traditional’ symptoms as still outlined on the government website, such as anosmia (loss of smell), shortness of breath and fever rank way down the list, at 5, 29 and 12 respectively. A persistent cough now ranks at number 8 if you’ve had two vaccine doses, so is no longer the top indicator of having COVID.
Really good video from John Campbell here…
Within it, he gives a likely explanation for the change in symptoms for those that have been vaccinated.
Basically, the vaccine, having been introduced by direct injection into the bloodstream, while protecting systemically the majority of the body, doesn’t cross the mucus membrane and provide protection on that side. So anything on the other side of the mucus membrane is still at risk from showing symptoms of Covid, so sore throat, cough, headaches etc. But the vital organs and other parts of your body are better protected. (This is my simple layman understanding of why the major symptoms have changed - you’d have still had these symptoms if unvaccinated, but probably barely noticed them among the more severe symptoms from the rest of your body).
Another interesting point raised in the video, is that of booster jabs, and whether we should be reliant on them or not. A very good argument is made against becoming reliant on further vaccine jabs.
The vaccines all work by targeting the spike protein. But the virus is made up of 28 different proteins, any one of which will trigger an immune response from someone previously infected. This means that someone who has been exposed to the virus itself is likely far better protected against further exposure, than someone who has simply been vaccinated - the vaccine, and hence the vaccinated only group, are reliant on the virus keeping its spike protein, which further mutations may, or may not do.
By being vaccinated, and then having exposure to ‘the real thing’, one would become far better protected against the virus, and any mutations, than relying on the vaccine alone. Basically far better protection than relying on annual boosters, which protect against the spike protein alone, rather than the whole gamut of other proteins. There is a case for immuno-compromised people having boosters, and any other group that may not produce sufficient antibody protection naturally (the elderly?) - but for the vast majority, who are double vaccinated, the best solution is likely to be to get on with our lives, accept that we may be exposed to the virus, accept the mostly mild symptoms, and then appreciate that we now have the best possible protection against further serious infection.
Those adults that have chosen not to get vaccinated can take their chances with the full monty, but for the rest of us, the message in the video is that once double vaccinated we should basically just get on with our lives.
Oh and it makes me even more convinced that Australia and New Zealand are screwed and have dug themselves a seriously deep hole they are going to struggle to get out of.
