sadly the deaths in Europe are going to spike badly in the next few weeks I think. They were a little behind us with this variant taking off?!
Yup - Portugal right now has the highest level of infections and death per capita in the world right now which is quite sobering, wife is a bag of nerves but told her to cherish the things that we have taken for granted for too long - some good can and have to come out of these sad events - crossing my fingers I cab get over for a game at around may and see a bustling great city again

Maybe that’s why the doctor knocked me off vitamin D supplement she said that she never saw anyone with as high a vitamin D level as myself I must have been toxic
Oh well I will be okay if I get covid,,, or she just wanted to save the vitamin D for other people who need it more than I. I never had the flu or bad colds ever not once. Now I know why.

Had my first vaccine (Oxford) at the Etihad today. It was all very well organised with all staff being polite and professional. Going there remind reminded me of how much I miss match day! Having already had covid hopefully this will top up my immunity while waiting for the second dose.
What? The staff being polite and professional reminded you of the Etihad?? Moving to your block when it reopens lol.

Why doesn't South African use a whole virus vaccine on this variant? Seems less risky than using antibodies that specifically target the region we are most worried about.

I agree with everything you've said. Worries me because I think the vaccine with reduce illness but not stop transmission.

I honestly don't see life ever being 'normal' again.

I mean, do you ever see full football stadiums again for eg?
I think habits might change. I used to be shocked when I used to see foreign students wearing masks but that came from somewhere (SARS and pollution).

You can't reduce symptomatic illness without reducing viral load so imo transmission will be much reduced in the vaccinated population, especially after the 2nd jabs. It maybe possible for the vaccinated population to carry and transmit the virus, but the R value will fall below 1 and hence it will decay into the background.

I do wonder if this variant really started in Kent, firstly France (not very far from Kent), were getting 50-80,000 cases per day in early November, just before this kicked off here, so was there a mutation there before here, that maybe mutated again in Kent ?

Other european countries had huge case numbers per population around the same time too.
See link for one account of its development COG-UK

Well behind with the vaccinations as well.
I don't think they have even approved the AstraZeneca vaccine yet and as we know that is much easier to deploy. It's pretty outrageous really unless there's some very good reason which we haven't heard about yet.

It’s apparently likely to be approved at the end of this week, yet I’ve never understood why it took AZ quite so long to submits its application to the European body.

I don’t know but since a chunk of the MHRA personnel worked for the EMA until recently, then getting MHRA sign off first might have been seen as a stepping stone to getting the green light from the EMA. It probably helps with U.K. supplies that there hasn’t been EMA / EU approval.

That explains it then. Late submission by AZN.

I've got mine there on Friday. I assume you just park in the car park at the bottom of Joe Mercer Way and its all signposted? Didn't get any of that information when I booked on to it.

The submission was only entered sometime between 11th-15th Jan, so even if it is approved by the end of this week, then it is only slightly slower than the UK (submitted 23rd Dec and approved 30th Dec).

It seemed to take around a month (1st Dec-6th Jan) for the EMA to approve Moderna's vaccine, so if the AZ one is approved this week, then that's practically 'warp speed' by European standards. :-)

Doesn't matter a jot, however, when all of the suppliers suddenly need to upgrade their manufacturing processes (why are they all in Belgium?), and journalists should be asking politicians (of all hues) why this hadn't been addressed in the last 8 months.

Talk this morning thta restrictions may have to stay until September, now I don't think that means lockdown as today but either way this seems to be getting worse rather than better. The vaccine is excellent news and the only positive from the last 12 months but if this thing mutates to a pint where it become ineffective we could be in a long term cycle of this dance. We are already hearing that the lockdown is not slowing the rate as hoped although I believe this to be because we haven't had a true lockdown as such.

Hancock has stated that he really worries about future mutations, so do I.

It is like a disaster movie, you know it could happen but never honestly believed it would.
