In the Netherlands, it was decided in mid-December that all schools would remain closed until at least January 18th, when the government will reevaluate the situation. Cases of the British variant were discovered in a Rotterdam primary school. Unpopular decision with parents but taken early, covers the whole country, and prioritizes preserving the healthcare system.

I'm in CHESHIRE which is tier 4 I think, but our head emailed yesterday saying nothings changed as of yet the children go back on Tuesday. I think it's pretty simple keep them off but make up the time in the summer holidays, regardless after last year the summer break should only be two weeks tops this year but I'm sure the teachers union will have something to say about that, even though teachers have plenty of time off already.

TBH my ex partner and children's mum is a teacher, and that time off thing is just plain nonsense from people who dont understand what work teachers do. Pretty much work through the holidays marking or setting assignments then planning for the next term, and to be fair they cant book a holiday when they want, only in the holidays, when no one wants to go because its twice as expensive and rammed, they also get paid a shockingly low wage, less than the average truck driver. 2 weeks wouldn't be enough time to set up for the following year.

I sympathise.

Johnson has u-turned how many times now?

Can't believe he's saying send your kids to school today, given how many times he's been shown up. This one would be unforgivable.
All it takes is for one child to go back to school tomorrow contract the virus and become seriously ill or god forbid die and the whole thing will be an absolute disaster for the government.

Johnson has backed himself into a corner this morning saying kids must go back to school. If you do back down it'll make the government weak, if they don't I can see a lot of councils refusing to open and parents keeping their kids at hone

Teachers who are not allowed to put suncream on children on scorching hot days now expected to put test swaps up noses
Not going to happen
I had to do the swap for my 10yr old at etihad and she was not comfortable with dad doing it, lots of kids will find it distressing

give it a few months they will be giving them vaccines

In fairness, that is not what he said. He said parents should send their children to school in those areas where schools reopen, so a recommendation rather than an obligation.
Similarly, when pressed he did not say the Government would prosecute those councils who planned on remaining closed: Brighton & Hove and possibly Birmingham.
As you say, it looks increasingly as if authority lies with parents and councils.

Teachers are still working when the schools are closed, many of whom are still going into school to teach kids of key workers.

Based on form he seems to have a tragic flaw of always taking the most optimistic possible view. And that's a generous interpretation.
