TBH my ex partner and children's mum is a teacher, and that time off thing is just plain nonsense from people who dont understand what work teachers do. Pretty much work through the holidays marking or setting assignments then planning for the next term, and to be fair they cant book a holiday when they want, only in the holidays, when no one wants to go because its twice as expensive and rammed, they also get paid a shockingly low wage, less than the average truck driver. 2 weeks wouldn't be enough time to set up for the following year.
Teaching the kids is only a part of what teachers do.

Further education staff don’t get the school holidays off unless they book time off. They go to the workplace all year round.

Staff who work in schools who do alternative qualifications than just GCSEs and GCEs are full time (as opposed to term-time-only) as well. And that’s a lot of schools these days.

And, as you say, normal teachers work all year, they just don’t have to go to the workplace during the kid’s holidays, even though many still do.

Many schools in deprived areas are open all year round for kids who need feeding in the holidays as well. Its not like decades ago when schools were only open 39 weeks a year. It’s very different these days.

Full time non-teaching staff are used differently in the holidays than they are during term time too.

All it takes is for one child to go back to school tomorrow contract the virus and become seriously ill or god forbid die and the whole thing will be an absolute disaster for the government.

Johnson has backed himself into a corner this morning saying kids must go back to school. If you do back down it'll make the government weak, if they don't I can see a lot of councils refusing to open and parents keeping their kids at hone

Give it till the end of the week, then he will be using the following the science excuse for making a decision which should have been made last week.

School holidays are time off from teaching, but the job is much more than just standing in front of kids during term time.

With the Summer exams three weeks later than usual but results day being only one week later, a lot of teachers will need to be marking exams in the early part of the Summer holidays.

Fair play I didnt know this, honestly just thought they were off minus marking bits of work and some planning maybe. It's a tough one seeing the effect a lockdown and no school had on my boys it wasnt nice, soon as they went back in they were so happy and neither of them want to have anymore time off but on the other hand with what your saying is there any other option other than losing that valuable school times its definitely not safe right now, there grandparents will also have to pick them up some days as were both in work. So many different narratives.

you said it, they are everywhere, our road was pretty busy NYE between 6pm and 10pm. Where on earth were people legitamately going? I am sure the vast majority were just breaking the rules.
I posted yesterday, mate is a cab driver, non stop work NYE up to 3am NYD and longer if he had chosen to do so, just taking people to house party's and home, most not wearing any face coverings.

Was in local Asda yesterday quite a lot without coverings including a pregnant woman, a very obese young girl and an elderly man with a walking stick, makes my blood boil so much. On the other side there are parents who ensure their kids wear masks even though they are under the age of having to do so, it's called education and should be applauded.

It’s one of the shit situations in all this. Hopefully the knock-on effect will be an increase in kids’ appreciation of education that we have in this country and a striving to make up for lost time in future years.

I'm in CHESHIRE which is tier 4 I think, but our head emailed yesterday saying nothings changed as of yet the children go back on Tuesday. I think it's pretty simple keep them off but make up the time in the summer holidays, regardless after last year the summer break should only be two weeks tops this year but I'm sure the teachers union will have something to say about that, even though teachers have plenty of time off already.
You’re not quite sure which tier you’re in yet you have a simple plan for the education of our children. I might not take you up on that plan if it’s all the same. Ta

He did add that they could adapt a vaccine in 4-6 weeks potentially too, but still concerning. Would be quite if we'd locked the borders down hey...
