Coronavirus (2021) thread

2 friends went to Calle Di Mijas in Spain to shut their apartment down for the winter, both tested on their return home as they operate taxis. One caught it, the other didn't, not sure how this can happen but I'm sure we'll find out in years to come.
IIt is possible to have a very low level of the virus in the body with a negative test result or it could be they've caught it on the flight back maybe. Mask-wearing on flight for example might just have helped.

Also i think the swab only determines if COVID is present. I don't think it determines if the person has ever had it - blood test would show if the non-affected might have had it before.

I think the dangers of travel are as much in behaviours whilst away rather than the travel itself (though I suspect you may be underestimating exposure risk there).

How many people go on holiday and adhere to the rules away to the same extent they do at home? I would hazard a guess that a large slice of the attraction of going to Dubai is precisely that the rules are laxer.

I absolutely agree with this, and again only going off my experiences but people were just happy and grateful to be away so they were following the local rules and regulations very closely (and these rules were more enforced and robust than back in the UK).

There was one occasion in Zante where people would congregate at the beach after midnight when the bars chucked out, and there was more mixing and less distancing than there should have been, but in my 6 occasions between July and December that's the only time I thought 'that shouldn't really be happening' (as a sidenote I think the Greek government should have allowed bars to stagger close to avoid that possible scenario)

The rules were possibly more relaxed in Dubai because of the requirement to be either tested on arrival or land with a negative test taken within the previous 72 hours? I've never been so I don't know, but Dubai isn't a place where you'd want to break the rules. My mate was there recently and he said all the COVID stuff was enforced, but they did have a sharp rise of cases so who knows.

Yeah, my partner has had it but I didn't.
The studies into why this happens will be fascinating but an article on BBC news this morning said, again, the scientists are looking at blood. Some people's immune systems go into overdrive yet others don't. Weird.

Its odd isn’t it.
I know someone who’s a bit of an overweight alcy (functioning, good job etc) but got over it with relative ease.
Then there’s me who runs/long walks every day, eats healthily & barely drinks absolutely hammered by it (2 weeks in).

The doc over the phone mentioned the irony of that. The body wasn’t used to getting ill so went into this over dramatic loop. I never followed up what he said (concentration is v low) but struck me as rather interesting.

Yep agree with that but they have had regular tests due to the nature of their business. My understanding is an antibody/blood test would determine a level of immunity, I guess this virus will keep scientists busy for many years to come.

i honestly wouldnt know where to find a link , i just followed things in real time

Was quite a big claim you made.

''People insisting on going abroad in the summer has hugely contributed to the spread in infections''

But you have absolutely nothing to back it up with?
Is that because you want it to be true, but it might not actually be true?

I followed covid and patterns , everything in real time as it happened , i have no link to give you. You went abroad six times in a pandemic ? You should think about that

Are you fully recovered now? I had fatigue for quite a few weeks after the initial illness that lasted around 16 days?

It is certainly interesting and, like you already know, some "fit" people get very poorly yet some (like my partner's Dad) are seemingly vulnerable but skip through it.
Glad to read you are feeling better though, must have been scary for a while :-(
