Dr Anthony Fauci, the US chief immunologist, has warned that the coronavirus variant first detected in the UK is more deadly.

Speaking to Face the Nation on CBS News, Dr Fauci said: "We need to assume now that what has been circulating dominantly in the UK does have a certain degree of increase in what we call virulence, namely the power of the virus to cause more damage, including death."

He said this assumption was based on the British data analysis, and added that the teams in the US wanted to look at the data themselves.

"We have every reason to believe them as they are a very competent group," he said

It would be a surprise if all holiday destination types remain closed. Maybe some will not go because they had their fingers burnt last time when the Govt started to close flight corridors.

From what I have read, Cyprus will not allow anyone in who has not had a vaccine. Even with so few cases (last time I looked), the Govt had banned households mixing. Frustrating for us as we have a little place over there. But like I said elsewhere, there are other benefits as it will make a loft extension and a new car more affordable :)
they're back in lockdown as far as I'm aware.

My friends wife works in a pharmacy in Manchester and we was chatting today (over xbox live) and he said that she is getting her jab next week. Of all of the staff there (about 8 or 9) only 3 were willing to have a jab and that including the actual pharmacists.

I just don't get it.

The only way to stop folk coming and going around the globe is to close the UK’s borders - end of.
Simply asking folk not to do things doesn’t work.
Some people haven’t even got the self discipline to stay away from illegal raves on a Saturday night.
Should have happened a year ago and should still be in place into later this year.

Maybe they've already had Covid, have antibodies and are worried about any unforeseen complications with the vaccines.

I think there's good evidence that variants from Spain became prevalent here after the summer.

Original research here.

There certainly is. Genetic sequencing had it as the main variant in the UK in October till the Kent variant took off.

And I think this paper makes the point that limited import from abroad by holiday makers made little to no difference in comparison to domestic spread. I would argue there isn't conclusive evidence for this. The gut tells you that if that folk go overseas then it might come back, but I think the import was minimised. Not saying it never happened though.

(Also my link trumps yours as mine's reviewed, ;). )

Maybe the problem stemmed from open door Britain and the 450,000 flying into our shores every month from countries such as China and the USA without hindrance or check. Maybe that wasn't clever or shrewd ? I think it's all too easy to point the finger of blame at individuals that have actually followed government guideline throughout this pandemic. If the finger has to be pointed then should it not be pointed firmly at those that haven't.

Definitely needs something stronger at least. For all the passenger location and contact details forms, all that happened last time I flew in (Nov) was a phone call 3 days later essentially asking 2You know you're supposed to stay inside for 14 days?"

I do.

"Ok, thanks, carry on"
