And I think this paper makes the point that limited import from abroad by holiday makers made little to no difference in comparison to domestic spread. I would argue there isn't conclusive evidence for this. The gut tells you that if that folk go overseas then it might come back, but I think the import was minimised. Not saying it never happened though.

(Also my link trumps yours as mine's reviewed, ;). )

Certainly it's incontrovertible that the main driver throughout in the uk has been community spread rather than import.

The sudden emphasis on border control, while we have amongst the highest prevalence in the world is, to put it very mildly, inconsistent with our previous policy.

At the same time, there will need to be a discussion about movement, in both directions, and it should happen sooner rather than later. Israel has closed its borders today, which is a monumental step, but it’s already started planning for how people will need health passports to travel in and out. Unlike T&T and Apps, this is something that will probably require countries to have the same/similar system.

GM Scoreboard:

1074 - down 291 from 1365. 32.2% of North West Total which fell 1045 to 3337. Rise of 1.0% on yesterday

3 wks v 2 wks v last wk v Today:- 1665 v 2233 v 1860 v 1074. Steady fall wk to wk in new year.

Pop Score is cases across whole pandemic v 100,000 people - rises daily but lower the better.

Weekly Pop is same measure across last 7 days only. Can rise or fall depending on if more cases or less occur today v the same day last week.

Either way Up is bad, down is good.

Manchester 260 – down from 292. Total 43, 981. Weekly 2058. Pop score up 47 to 7955. Weekly Pop down 9 to 372.

Wigan 135 - down from 173. Total cases 24, 052. Weekly 1155. Pop score up 41 to 7318. Weekly Pop down 5 to 351.

Stockport 110 – down from 117. Total cases 16, 617. Weekly 885. Pop score up 37 to 5663. Weekly Pop down 2 to 302.Much lower numbers week to week to match from now on so GM weekly pop falls are going to be slower from here.

Salford 106 - down from 121. Total cases 18, 947. Weekly 905. Pop score up 41 to 7320. Weekly Pop down 9 to 349.

Rochdale 90- down from 112. Total cases 17, 599. Weekly 734. Pop score up 41 to 7913.Weekly Pop up 3 to 330.

Bolton 88 - down from 143. Total cases 20, 705. Weekly 988. Pop score up 30 to 7231. Lowest rise in ages for Bolton. But not quite enough for best in GM today. Weekly Pop down 19 to 343. Big week to week fall.

Trafford 84- down from 111. Total cases 13, 791. Weekly 737. Pop score up 36 to 5810. Stockport's Pop Score lead cut by 1 to 147. Weekly Pop down 5 to 310.

Tameside 78 – down from 104. Total cases 14, 639. Weekly 760. Pop score up 34 to 6463. Weekly Pop up 1 to 335.

Oldham 76 - down from 103. Total cases 19, 393. Weekly 625. Pop score up 32 to 8179. Weekly Pop stays at 264. Only borough in the 200s but a few on the brink of breaking that barrier even though getting lower scores is now harder week to week as numbers are not sky high.

Bury 47- down from 89. One of the lowest GM numbers in many weeks, Total cases 14, 310. Weekly 592. Enough to snatch lowest weekly total lead from Oldham. Pop score up 25 to 7493. Also lowest Pop rise in GM for Bury which is a rarity given it is a small borough so need really low numbers to do that usually. Weekly Pop goes down by a huge 38 given this very low number to 310.

Nobody in GM now above the 300s and all boroughs are spread between 264 and 372 and the gaps narrowing with one or two close to going sub 300 with another good day. A sign of numbers returning more to normality. Which given the circumstances can only be good news

How are so many people still catching this when we have been in lockdown for a month? Still over 1000 cases in Warrington last week. I don’t get why every week there are still this many. I thought it would be low hundreds by now.

It’s not always about consistency. Hancock said the 77 cases of the South African variant in the U.K. are from travellers to our Country.
